Chennai Super Kings have moved to fifth place in the IPL 2026 points table after defeating Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 10. CSK were chasing 204, and they achieved the target in 19.2 overs to pick up their third consecutive victory.
Jamie Overton claimed Player of the Match with figures of 3 for 36, while Urvil Patel was named Cricinfo’s MVP after a stunning 65 off 23 balls that effectively decided the outcome.
Josh Inglis Sets the Platform for LSG
LSG chose to send Josh Inglis in ahead of Mitchell Marsh to open the innings, and the decision paid off early. Inglis attacked from the first ball, targeting Akeal Hosein with three consecutive boundaries in the opening over.
He reached 50 off just 17 balls and was 77 off 25 at the end of the powerplay. Only three batters in IPL history have scored more runs inside the first six overs — Suresh Raina, Travis Head, and Jake Fraser-McGurk. Inglis used ramps, cover drives, and improvised shots to keep LSG ahead of the required rate throughout the powerplay.
CSK’s response came through Noor Ahmad and Jamie Overton in the middle overs. Noor Ahmad, who had conceded 111 runs without a wicket in his first three outings this season, has transformed his game over the last eight matches — taking 12 wickets at an economy of 7.16. He dismissed Nicholas Pooran cheaply, continuing his strong run.
Overton was the pick of the bowlers. He dismissed Inglis with a delivery that caught the batter looking to scoop, then added two more wickets to restrict LSG. The visitors managed 203 for 8, with Shahbaz Ahmed’s unbeaten 43 off 25 helping them cross 200 in the final over.

Urvil Patel’s 13-Ball Fifty Changes the Game
CSK lost Sanju Samson early for 28 off 14 balls before Ruturaj Gaikwad and Urvil Patel steadied the chase. Gaikwad hit 42 off 28 and recorded his highest first-10-balls score in the IPL this season.
When Urvil walked in, CSK’s win probability stood at 38.13%. What followed was one of the most destructive cameos Chepauk has seen. He hit six sixes in his first eight scoring shots, with seven of his eight sixes going to midwicket. Urvil reached his half-century in 13 balls — equalling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history.
By the time he was dismissed for 65 off 23 balls, CSK’s win probability had jumped to 93.02%. The crowd of 32,825 gave him a standing ovation as he walked back to the dressing room.

CSK Hold Their Nerve to Complete the Chase
The final stretch was not straightforward. After Urvil’s dismissal, CSK lost three wickets for 43 runs across 41 balls. Dewald Brevis made 10, Kartik Sharma contributed 20, and pressure mounted heading into the death overs.
Shivam Dube and impact player Prashant Veer steadied CSK, needing 35 off the last 23 balls. Veer survived two dropped catches in the 19th over before hitting a six to bring the equation down to 10 off the final over. LSG turned to Aiden Markram, but Dube hit back-to-back sixes to seal the win with four balls remaining.
