CSK climbed up to sixth on the points table with their fourth win in nine games, while MI were pushed to the brink of elimination.
Neither MS Dhoni nor Rohit Sharma featured in the match due to injury, yet the contest drew massive crowd interest. More than 31,900 fans were present at Chepauk, and the home side gave them plenty to cheer about from the first over to the last.

MI Batters Fail to Capitalise Despite Explosive Start
Mumbai Indians crashed seven sixes in the powerplay after opting to bat first, but some of that hitting was offset by the 19 dot balls they played out during the phase.
Ryan Rickelton scored 37 off 24 balls before holing out to deep square leg off Noor Ahmad. Rickelton smacked rookie left-arm spinner Prashant Veer for three sixes in his first IPL over, releasing the pressure that Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj had built up.
Naman Dhir top-scored for MI with 57 off 37 balls but could not find the higher tempo needed to hurt CSK. He started quickly, moving to 19 off nine balls, but slowed down considerably against spin. Hardik Pandya laboured to 18 off 23 balls before Kamboj had him holing out in the final over. After hitting seven sixes in the first six overs, MI managed only three in the next 14.
Debutant seamer Ramakrishna Ghosh claimed the prized wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, who sliced a catch to Dewald Brevis at sweeper cover for 21 off 12 balls. Kamboj finished with 3 for 32 and Noor Ahmad took 2 for 26 as CSK restricted MI to 159 for 7.
Gaikwad and Kartik Put on Match-Winning Stand
CSK lost Sanju Samson early, caught behind off Bumrah for 11. Urvil Patel then hit a brisk 24 off 12 before being bowled by Ghazanfar. From there, Gaikwad and Kartik took full control.
Gaikwad reached his fifty off 34 balls, holding the chase together through the middle overs. He finished unbeaten on 67 off 48 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes.
Kartik targeted the mystery spin of AM Ghazanfar, scoring 23 off 13 balls against him alone. He closed out the game with a reverse-scoop off Boult, finishing 54 not out off 40 balls. CSK reached 160 for 2 in 18.1 overs, winning with 11 balls to spare.

MI’s Playoff Hopes Hanging by a Thread
This was the second time CSK outplayed MI in IPL 2026, leaving Hardik Pandya’s side on the brink of elimination.
With Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals all pulling far ahead, CSK and MI can barely afford any slip-ups from here on. For MI, sitting second from bottom with dwindling chances, the road back into playoff contention looks increasingly difficult.
