CSK and RR have played 32 IPL matches. The head-to-head is 16-16. That’s not a coincidence. It’s the product of 15 seasons where neither side has been able to pull clear of the other for long. RR swept all three meetings in 2008. CSK dominated the 2011-2014 stretch. RR have won eight of the last. The lead has changed hands across 15 active seasons, and the overall record has ended up exactly level.
Below is the complete head-to-head breakdown β every result from 2008 to 2025, team and individual records, and how each era of this rivalry has played out.

| Won | 16 | 16 |

How It All Started β 2008 and the Rivalry’s First Chapter
RR won all three meetings in the inaugural season, including a win over CSK in the final. That final is one of IPL’s foundational stories β Yusuf Pathan top-scoring with 56, Shane Warne and Sohail Tanvir finishing the job in a last-ball thriller, and Rajasthan walking away as the first-ever IPL champions.
The first match of the rivalry, played on May 4, 2008, in Jaipur, was even more one-sided. Tanvir’s 6/14 skittled CSK for 109, and RR chased it down with more than five overs to spare. That bowling figure still stands as the best by any Royals bowler against CSK.
CSK Strike Back β The Middle Years (2009β2014)
After being swept in 2008, Chennai found their footing fast. They won both encounters in 2009, both in South Africa, where the tournament was briefly hosted, and then took control of the rivalry through the early 2010s. Between 2011 and 2014, CSK won seven of the eight matches played β a spell of dominance that shifted the overall ledger in their favour.
The one outlier in that stretch was Shane Watson’s 101 off 61 balls at Chepauk in 2013, six fours, six sixes, a proper assault, but CSK still won that game by five wickets. Watson made a hundred and ended up on the losing side, which is the kind of cruel footnote this rivalry seems to specialise in.
2015 and 2018 β Split Series, Growing Tension
Both seasons ended 1-1, with momentum swinging between the two sides. RR’s 8-wicket demolition in Ahmedabad in 2015 was as comprehensive as it sounds; CSK’s 64-run win in Pune in 2018 was equally emphatic going the other way. Neither team could establish control, and the rivalry began taking on a more evenly contested character.
RR’s Recent Run β 2020 to 2025
This is where the balance truly shifted. From 2020 onwards, RR have been the dominant side in this fixture, winning eight of the last ten encounters. Four straight victories between 2021 and 2023 marked their longest winning streak against CSK in IPL history.
The 2023 season was particularly sharp. RR won by 3 runs in Chennai and then 32 runs in Jaipur, keeping CSK under pressure across both legs. In 2025, Guwahati hosted the fixture and RR squeezed home by 6 runs in what was another close finish.
CSK’s solitary win in this recent period came in 2024 at Chepauk, where they won by 5 wickets, a reminder that Chepauk remains their stronghold, where they’ve won six of eight home matches against RR.

Highest team total
The 2010 meeting at the MA Chidambaram Stadium produced the highest scoring game in this fixture’s history. CSK posted 246/5, RR replied with 223/5, and still lost by 23 runs. Both teams put up their highest-ever totals against each other in the same match β and CSK still won comfortably.
Lowest team total
The very first meeting between these sides told a completely different story. On May 4, 2008 in Jaipur, Sohail Tanvir’s 6/14 reduced CSK to 109 all out. RR knocked off the target with more than five overs to spare. From the opening ball, this fixture had teeth.
Highest individual score
Murali Vijay’s 127 in that same 2010 game is the highest individual score this fixture has seen. From the RR side, Watson’s 101 off 61 balls in 2013 at Chepauk β six fours, six sixes β stands out for a different reason. He made a hundred and still ended up on the losing side. RR lost by five wickets.
Most runs
Raina’s 630 runs against RR is the highest aggregate by any batter in this fixture. He played for CSK across multiple stints and was consistently productive against this opposition. Watson leads for RR with 480 runs, built across several seasons and anchored by that 2013 century.
Most wickets
Ravindra Jadeja‘s 20 wickets against RR put him ahead of every other bowler in this fixture, from either side. He has taken wickets and kept scoring in check across different phases of the game, which is why the number is as high as it is. Tanvir leads for RR with 10, a tally that owes a lot to what he did in 2008.
Best bowling figures
Tanvir’s 6/14 in the first-ever meeting was the best bowling figures in IPL history at the time. No RR bowler has come close to it against CSK since. Jadeja’s 4/11 in 2015 is the best single-match return for CSK against RR and fits neatly into why he leads the wickets chart by such a margin.

Where Things Stand

The head-to-head is level at 16-16 across 32 matches. RR have won eight of the last ten and swept both meetings in 2025, so while the overall record is tied, recent form clearly favors Rajasthan.
CSK’s most reliable advantage remains Chepauk, where they have won six of eight home matches against RR. Outside of that, RR have been the more consistent side. With IPL 2026 yet to begin, the next meeting between these two will give one side a lead in a rivalry that, across 15 seasons, has refused to settle.
