Sunrisers Hyderabad have confirmed the signing of South African pacer Gerald Coetzee as a like-for-like replacement for David Payne, who has been ruled out of IPL 2026 with an ankle injury.
The franchise secured Coetzee for INR 2 crore, and the IPL officially confirmed the move through a media release on April 18. With the business end of the tournament approaching, SRH wasted little time filling the gap in their overseas bowling stocks.
David Payne’s IPL 2026 Campaign Ends Prematurely
Payne’s stint with the Orange Army lasted just two matches before injury forced him out. On debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the left-arm seamer delivered an encouraging performance, finishing with figures of 2/35 across three overs and removing both captain Rajat Patidar and wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma.
His second outing against Kolkata Knight Riders, however, told a different story. Payne went wicketless and conceded 35 runs in just two overs, and shortly after that game, the ankle injury that had been troubling him ended his season entirely. It is worth noting that Payne had originally come into the SRH squad as cover for Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards, who missed the full season with a foot injury of his own. The back-to-back setbacks left Hyderabad stretched in their overseas bowling department at a critical stage of the competition.
What Gerald Coetzee Brings to SRH
Coetzee arrives with both international credentials and prior IPL experience, making him a practical choice rather than a speculative one. The right-arm pacer has represented South Africa across all three formats, featuring in four Tests, 14 ODIs and 18 T20Is, and has picked up 67 international wickets in total.
His ability to consistently bowl above 145 kmph gives SRH a genuine wicket-taking threat in the middle overs, an area where they have occasionally looked short of penetration this season.
On the IPL front, Coetzee is not walking into unfamiliar territory. He has played 14 matches in the league so far, representing Mumbai Indians across 10 games in IPL 2024 and Gujarat Titans in four matches during IPL 2025, collecting 15 wickets across both stints.

SRH’s Injury Problems Continue to Mount
Coetzee’s signing is not an isolated development. Earlier this season, SRH also brought in Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka to replace England’s Brydon Carse, who was ruled out after being struck during a net session. On top of that, captain Pat Cummins has yet to take the field in IPL 2026 as he continues his recovery from a back issue, which has placed additional responsibility on the rest of the bowling attack.
SRH currently sit fifth on the points table with two wins from five matches and a net run rate of +0.576. Their next fixture is against Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, and Coetzee could be in line for an immediate debut depending on the team’s combination.
