Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in Ahmedabad on Thursday and secured a top-two finish in the IPL 2026 points table. Led by strong batting performances from Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler, Gujarat Titans posted 229 for 4 before bowling Chennai Super Kings out for 140 in 13.4 overs.
The result officially ended Chennai Super Kingsβ slim playoff hopes, while Gujarat Titans completed the league stage with momentum heading into the playoffs.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan Lead Gujarat Titans Charge
After Chennai Super Kings elected to field first, Gujarat Titans made an aggressive start on a batting-friendly surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gill attacked from the beginning and reached his half-century in just 23 balls. The Gujarat Titans captain scored 64 off 37 deliveries, hitting seven fours and three sixes before falling to Spencer Johnson in the 13th over.
Sai Sudharsan initially played the supporting role before accelerating through the middle overs. The left-hander scored 84 off 53 balls, including seven boundaries and four sixes. His innings also marked a fifth consecutive IPL fifty.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan added 125 runs for the opening wicket, continuing one of the most productive opening partnerships of IPL 2026. After Gillβs dismissal, Buttler maintained the scoring rate with an unbeaten 57 off 27 balls. The England batter struck five fours and four sixes at a strike rate above 211.
Gujarat Titans crossed 200 in the 18th over and finished with 229 for 4 from their 20 overs. Chennai Super Kings conceded 17 extras, including 13 wides, while Anshul Kamboj endured a difficult outing, finishing with figures of 1 for 56.
Mohammed Siraj and Rashid Khan Dismantle CSK
Chasing 230, Chennai Super Kings lost wickets immediately. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Sanju Samson with the first ball of the innings before removing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Urvil Patel in his next spell.
At 29 for 3, Chennai Super Kings were already under pressure. Kagiso Rabada added another breakthrough by dismissing Matthew Short for 24.

Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis attempted to rebuild, but Gujarat Titans continued to strike regularly.
Shivam Dube provided the only major resistance for Chennai Super Kings with a quickfire 47 off 17 balls. The left-hander hit four boundaries and four sixes, briefly lifting the scoring rate during the middle overs.
However, his dismissal proved decisive. Rashid Khan removed Dube before cleaning up the lower order. The Afghanistan spinner finished with figures of 3 for 18 from two overs.
Siraj and Rabada also claimed three wickets each as Chennai Super Kings were bowled out in just 13.4 overs.

Gujarat Titans Enter Playoffs in Strong Form
Gujarat Titans’ balance, with both bat and ball, was on display with the win ahead of the IPL playoffs. Gill extended his impressive season as one of the top run scorers in IPL 2026, and Sai Sudharsan remained in the discussion for winning the Orange Cap following his impressive run of form at the top.
Buttlerβs late batting surge also added more strength to the batting line-up of Gujarat Titans, more so in the death over where the Chennai Super Kings faltered.
Siraj’s early breakthroughs meant that the CSK were never able to rest in the chase with the ball. Rashid Khan’s middle-order control was a key factor, along with Rabada’s finishing spell, in a comprehensive all-round display.
The win has sealed Gujarat Titans’ spot in the top two, giving them one more chance to reach the playoffs of IPL 2026 through Qualifier 1.
