Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is at the top of the Orange Cap leaderboard after making 43 runs against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 28. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener became the first player this season to reach the 400-run milestone in IPL 2026.
He achieved this feat during a high-scoring match where the Rajasthan Royals defeated the table-topping Punjab Kings by six wickets. They chased a target of 223 and scored 228 in just 19.2 overs. RR stands in third position in the points table as they ended Punjab’s unbeaten streak.

Fastest to 400 Runs in IPL History
Sooryavanshi shattered a long-standing league record. He became the fastest player in the history of the Indian Premier League to reach 400 runs in a single season in terms of balls faced. The teenager reached the mark in just 167 deliveries. He surpassed the previous record held by Andre Russell, who took 188 balls to make the record in 2019.
In addition to beating Russell, he also moved ahead of Abhishek Sharma and Nicholas Pooran on this elite list. Sharma had previously reached 400 runs in 195 balls during the 2024 season. Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi’s current strike rate remains a staggering 238.09, which is the highest among the top ten most runs scored this year.

Dominating the Powerplay Overs
Sooryavanshi is most dangerous during the first six overs of an innings. He has scored 319 of his 400 runs during the Powerplay phase. He has faced only 130 balls during the powerplays. During this time, he has hit 29 fours and 29 sixes, with a strike rate of 245.4.
Furthermore, he has lost his wicket only four times during the Powerplay across nine matches. In the recent game against Punjab, he scored 43 runs off 16 balls in a chase of a massive target of 223.
Breaking Records Against Sunrisers Hyderabad
Before his latest success against Punjab, Sooryavanshi delivered a historic performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He scored 103 runs from just 37 balls at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. This innings included 12 sixes and five fours. Consequently, he became the youngest player to score 1,000 runs in T20 cricket at the age of 15 years and 29 days.
He made a century off just 36 balls, making it the third-fastest century in IPL history. He also set a new record for the most sixes in an IPL innings by an Indian player. Furthermore, he became the first player to hit four sixes in the opening over of an IPL match.
Assistant coach of RR, Vikram Rathour, also praised the young batter and how quickly he reached 500 total IPL runs, which was previously made by Glenn Maxwell.

How Is Sooryavanshi Off the Pitch
Despite his record-breaking performances, he is still a teenager. Sooryavanshi mentioned that he watches cartoons every day before the game to stay relaxed. This helps him clear his mind before going to face world-class bowlers. No matter his age, his coaches and teammates have noted his maturity.
Yashasvi Jaiswal praised the teenager after their recent win and handed him the Orange Cap during a post-match conference. Jaiswal stated that he enjoys watching Sooryavanshi hit the ball from the other end.
