Rajasthan Royals defeated the Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets in their first IPL 2026 match on 30 March 2026 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, with Vaibhav Sooryabansi, who made the chase look like a training session.
CSK had a rough night from the start. Their first game of IPL 2026 fell apart with the bat, and 127 never looked like a score that would trouble anyone, least of all a RR side with 15-year-old at the top of the order, who treated the chase like he was in the nets.

CSK Collapse: 41 for 4 in the Powerplay
The pitch had been under covers on both match day and the day before, and it showed. There was moisture in it, the ball moved around early, and RR, having won the toss, knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to bowl. Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger bowled the kind of lengths you normally see in Test cricket, and CSK’s top order had no answer.
Burger went first. Samson was setting up for an inswinger and got nothing of the sort; the ball seamed away, hit the top of off, and that was that. Six runs off seven balls. Archer then found Gaikwad’s stumps with a 143.3 kph delivery that gave him no time to think. Six runs off eleven balls. Ayush Mhatre lasted one ball, top-edging a hook to the keeper. Matthew Short chipped one to midwicket. Four overs later, CSK were 38 for 4 and already in serious trouble.
Jadeja Celebrates Homecoming with a Double Strike
Then came Ravindra Jadeja, and if anyone was waiting to see how he would handle playing against CSK for the first time in 17 years, they got their answer in his very first over.
Sarfaraz Khan had come in as the impact sub and looked decent enough for 17 off 12 balls. Jadeja skidded one in fast and flat; it thudded into the pads, and the finger went up.
Next, Dube, who had opened his account with a six, was drawn wide of off stump and skied a catch to long-off. Two wickets in one over, against his old club, on his first night back in pink. CSK were 57 for 6, and the game was already slipping away.
Jadeja finished with 2 for 18 in three overs. At the innings break, he smiled and said it himself, “Pink looks good on me.” Hard to argue.
Overton Saves CSK from Total Embarrassment
At 57 for 6, a total under 100 looked very likely. Jamie Overton had other ideas. The England allrounder held the innings together almost single-handedly, finishing with 43 off 36 balls, the only batter on either side to pass 20 in the CSK innings.
He and Anshul Kamboj put on 33 for the last wicket, which, remarkably, is the highest tenth-wicket stand in CSK’s history. It got them to 127, but by that point, it felt more like damage limitation than anything else.
Sooryavanshi’s 15-Ball Fifty Rewrites the Record Books
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is 15 years old; the IPL is 19. He batted like the age gap did not exist. He almost did not get started either. Kartik Sharma dropped him off Henry in the first over, a regulation catch that went down. The very next ball, Sooryavanshi hit Henry over long-on for six. That set the tone.
The shot of the night came in the third over. Henry tried a slower cutter outside off stump, a smart ball, well disguised. Sooryavanshi read it early, swung hard, and sent it over deep point on the up. Pure bat speed. He brought up his fifty off 15 balls, one of only five such instances in IPL history alongside Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Pat Cummins and Romario Shepherd.
CSK got him in the seventh over for 52 off 17 balls, caught at sweeper cover off Kamboj. By then, it did not matter. Jaiswal saw it through with 38 not out, Parag chipped in with 14, and RR crossed the line with 47 balls still unused.
Burger took the Player of the Match award for his 2 for 26, fair enough, given that his opening spell was what set everything else in motion.

Rajasthan Royals head to Ahmedabad to face the Gujarat Titans on April 4. They go there in good shape, a big win, a settled side, and a teenager who has just announced himself to the whole country.
Chennai Super Kings face Punjab Kings on April 3. The top order fell apart here, and the defeat was heavy. They need to sort things out quickly because Punjab will not be handing out any easy runs either.
