IPL 2026 Schedule Announced 74 Matches from March 28 to May 31

The Indian Premier League, or IPL, reigns as the world’s largest and most-viewed T20 cricket league. The 2026 season will be the 19th edition of the tournament. The IPL 2026 season is officially set to begin on March 28 and end on May 31, 2026, according to official sources. That gives the tournament roughly 65 days of cricket. Fans are in for a treat, with the world’s best players set to compete in India.

The IPL’s popularity continues to grow, and the 2026 season is expected to attract a massive global audience. The 2026 IPL will feature ten teams competing for the championship. The competition will adhere to the familiar T20 format, with each team playing league matches to determine the playoff contenders.

Total Matches and Format Explained

The 2026 IPL season will feature a total of 74 matches. This encompasses both the league games and the playoff rounds. Teams will face off against a variety of opponents, playing several matches during the tournament.

Ten teams are in the mix, so the match count stays up, promising a solid two months of cricket. The double round-robin setup means each team faces off against a bunch of others, both at home and on the road, which levels the playing field and cranks up the competition.

This format has been successful in previous IPL seasons. It ensures that teams must perform consistently to reach the playoffs.

Why IPL 2026 Schedule Was Delayed

The announcement of the IPL 2026 Schedule was delayed this year because of the assembly elections taking place in several Indian states. These states include Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.

Chennai, Kolkata, and Guwahati are among the key IPL venues located in these states. Because of security and logistical planning, the BCCI needed to adjust the schedule. Despite the delay, the final window of March 28 to May 31 was confirmed.

Match Structure and Timing

IPL matches are played in T20 format. Each cricket match includes:

20 Overs Per Team
Total 40 Overs Per Match

Most matches take around 3 hours to complete.

The matches are generally played at two timings:

Afternoon Match: 3:30 PM IST
Evening Match: 7:30 PM IST

Weekends often feature double-header matches, with two games scheduled for the same day.

Importance of IPL League Stage Matches

The longest part of IPL is the league stage. Each team plays 14 matches.

Point System:

Win2 points
Loss0 points
No Result1 Point

The top 4 teams in the league stage qualify for playoffs. Net Run Rate (NRR) is an important factor for qualification as teams with equal points are ranked based on NRR. This makes every match important, and a must-win. Even one loss can make an impact on playoff qualification.

Playoff Structure and Final

The playoffs feature the top four teams from the league stage.

Playoff Structure:

Qualifier 11st vs 2ndWinner goes directly to Final
Eliminator3rd vs 4thLoser is eliminated
Qualifier 2Loser of Qualifier 1 vs Winner of EliminatorWinner goes to Final
FinalWinner of Qualifier 1 vs Winner of Qualifier 2Winner wins IPL

This format favors the teams that performed best during the regular season. The championship will be decided in the final match, scheduled for May 31, 2026.

IPL Viewership Statistics

IPL is the most popular and unrivaled cricket league in the entire world:

  • Over 400 million viewers watch IPL every season
  • IPL generates billions in revenue
  • The league features over 100 international players
