Ishan Kishan walked out as stand-in captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday night and responded with a knock that set a new record at the club. His 80 off 38 balls, studded with eight fours and five sixes, made him the highest scorer for SRH on captaincy debut in IPL history.
However, the innings ultimately came in a losing cause as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased down a target of 202 with six wickets and 26 balls to spare in the IPL 2026 season opener at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
RCB cruised to 203 for four in just 15.4 overs, underpinned by a blazing 61 off 26 balls from Devdutt Padikkal and an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls from Virat Kohli, who finished the chase in his characteristic fashion and broke yet another IPL record in the process.
Records Broken, Early Statements Made
The match produced a series of notable milestones. Kishan’s knock placed him at the top of the list for highest scores by an SRH captain on debut, a record that came on the same night as his overall captaincy debut for the franchise.
Kohli surpassed AB de Villiers’ record for the most unbeaten scores of 50 or above in IPL history, a statistic that underlines his extraordinary consistency in run chases over nearly two decades of the competition. He also broke the record for the most half-centuries scored in a successful run chase in IPL history, now standing at 21, overtaking both David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.
The result placed RCB at the top of the early IPL 2026 standings with a net run rate of plus 2.907, which, while largely cosmetic at this stage of the competition, reflects the clinical manner in which they dispatched their opponents. SRH, on the other hand, will need to reassess their bowling options quickly. The absence of a reliable strike bowler beyond Duffy’s three-wicket haul and the death overs leaking runs too freely were the primary areas of concern on a night when their batsmen gave their bowlers plenty to work with.
SRH’s Batting
RCB skipper Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that was immediately vindicated by a devastating new-ball spell from New Zealand debutant Jacob Duffy. The tall right-arm seamer extracted sharp bounce from the surface, removed Abhishek Sharma for seven, Travis Head for a duck, and then dismissed a prematurely promoted Nitish Kumar Reddy cheaply, leaving SRH in serious trouble at 29 for three inside 4.2 overs. The visitors ended the powerplay at 49 for three, facing a situation that could have collapsed into a score well below 150.
The young captain, Kishan had other ideas. The left-hander joined Heinrich Klaasen in the middle and simply refused to play within the situation. He brought up his fifty off just 27 balls with a four off leg-spinner Suyash Sharma and was never bogged down by the pressure around him. Together with Klaasen, who contributed 31 off 22 balls, Kishan stitched a 97-run partnership for the fourth wicket that transformed the innings entirely. He targeted the shorter boundaries with ferocity and punished anything short or wide with his natural aggression, at one point carting Abhinandan Singh for six, four, and six in the same over.
A century appeared well within his reach when a moment of brilliance ended the innings. Phil Salt held a stunning one-handed diving catch near deep backward point to dismiss Kishan for 80, a dismissal that shifted the momentum back toward RCB at a critical point in the innings. The final five overs produced only 59 runs for SRH, a below-par return that ultimately defined the match. Aniket Verma offered a late rescue of sorts with a blistering 43 off 18 balls, including four maximums, but Romario Shepherd and Duffy kept taking wickets at the death. SRH finished on 201 for nine, a total that, on a different night, might have been competitive.

Duffy’s Debut Shapes the Narrative
Jacob Duffy arrived at the IPL as a relatively unknown quantity, but he left the season opener as the Player of the Match. His figures of three for 22 in four overs were the best by any RCB debutant in a long time and drew comparisons with Brendon McCullum’s match-defining performance on IPL’s opening night back in 2008 at the same ground. Duffy stayed disciplined throughout, consistently hitting a hard length and attacking the stumps. Crucially, he bowled his four overs in one unbroken spell and walked off with three wickets in the bag before the first half had fully settled.
Speaking after the match, Duffy said he simply focused on the lengths that had worked in practice.
“I just wanted to bowl the hard lengths, just keep the ball there,” he said. “Even better that I got to walk off the field after seven overs.”
He is expected to fill the role of Josh Hazlewood, RCB’s primary pace bowler, who is currently recovering from injury.
RCB’s Chase: Padikkal Explodes, Kohli Anchors
RCB lost Phil Salt early to Jaydev Unadkat, but that was the only moment of concern in the entire chase. Devdutt Padikkal, coming in at number three as an impact substitute, set the tone with a powerplay assault that left SRH’s bowlers without answers. He raced to a fifty off just 21 balls, his fastest in IPL history, and finished with 61 off 26 before being caught at long-off by Klaasen. By the time Padikkal departed, RCB had crossed the 100-run mark and the required run rate was already well under control.
Kohli, meanwhile, took on the anchor role with quiet authority. He worked the ball around in the middle overs and accelerated precisely when the situation demanded. Patidar contributed a brisk 31 off 12 balls before David Payne’s late double strike removed him and Jitesh Sharma off consecutive deliveries to briefly inject some life into SRH’s chase defense. The moment passed quickly. Kohli, unbeaten on 69, sealed the win with a boundary in the 15th over, sending Chinnaswamy into a state of celebration. Tim David provided composed support in the final stages as the pair put on an unbroken 40-run stand off 19 balls.

The IPL 2026 season continues on Sunday with Mumbai Indians taking on Kolkata Knight Riders. Kishan and SRH will have a chance to bounce back soon, but Saturday night in Bengaluru belonged to RCB.
