Rain wrecked what promised to be an entertaining contest at Eden Gardens on April 6. The IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings was officially abandoned due to heavy rain and a wet outfield, making it the first washout of the season.
Both teams collected one point each, with KKR finally getting off the mark after two straight defeats.
KKR Elected to Bat, Bartlett Made Them Regret It Instantly
Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision backfired almost immediately. Punjab Kings pacer Xavier Bartlett was unplayable in the opening powerplay, swinging the ball sharply and picking up two wickets inside two overs.
Finn Allen was the first to go, edging a length delivery outside off to wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh for 6 off 7 balls. Cameron Green, who has now recorded low scores in each of his outings this season, followed the next ball, nicking a back-of-length delivery through to the keeper for just 4 off 2 balls. Bartlett ended with extraordinary figures of 2/9 from just 1.4 overs.
Arshdeep Singh, operating from the other end, was equally disciplined. He conceded only 16 runs from two overs, keeping KKR’s batters on a tight leash. Questions were already being raised about KKR’s batting order, specifically why Sunil Narine was not opening, as the hosts found themselves in early trouble at 16/2.
Rahane and Raghuvanshi Steadied the Ship Before Rain Arrived

Two wickets down and the run rate already under pressure, Rahane and Raghuvanshi decided to play it steady. Rahane was on 8 off 6 balls, Raghuvanshi on 7 off 7, when a drizzle started creeping in midway through the fourth over. The players walked off with the scoreboard reading 25/2. Nobody expected it to last long.
What came next was not a drizzle; it was a full thunderstorm. Strong winds tore through Eden Gardens, rattling the press box. Puddles formed on the covers within minutes. The boundary areas were completely waterlogged. Any hope of resumption was fading fast.
Ground staff did not give up easily. When the rain eased briefly around 10:30 PM, they were out immediately, pulling off covers, running super soppers across the outfield, doing everything possible to beat the 11:14 PM cut-off for a five-over game. But the surface was still slippery and unsafe when they needed it ready.
At 11:10 PM, the umpires came out for a final inspection. Large puddles were still sitting near the boundary lines. Both captains, Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, were brought in for a brief discussion. At 11:18 PM, the match was officially abandoned. The wet outfield left officials with no other option.

Points Table Shake-Up: PBKS Lead, KKR Stuck Near the Bottom
Punjab Kings moved to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with five points from three matches. Kolkata Knight Riders, now on one point from three games, sit eighth. It is their first point of the season, though the manner in which they earned it will offer little comfort.
Cameron Green’s continued failures and KKR’s lack of momentum across all departments remain serious concerns. Shah Rukh Khan was spotted at the ground on April 6 in an intense conversation with KKR CEO Venky Mysore, a visible sign of the unease within the camp.
Interestingly, this marks the second consecutive season where a KKR versus PBKS fixture at Eden Gardens has ended in a washout.
What Comes Next for Both Sides
KKR remain at Eden Gardens on April 9 to face Lucknow Super Giants, with rain once again forecast for Kolkata. Punjab Kings return to action on April 11 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in New Chandigarh.
