Matheesha Pathirana’s long-awaited debut for Kolkata Knight Riders turned into a nightmare on Saturday evening. The Sri Lankan fast bowler, bought for Rs 18 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, managed to bowl only eight balls before walking off the Eden Gardens field with a hamstring complaint during KKR’s match against Gujarat Titans in Kolkata.
The pacer came in as an Impact Player substitute during KKR’s bowling innings and was introduced in the fourth over of Gujarat Titans’ chase. He gave away seven runs in his opening over. When he came back to bowl his second over, he delivered the first ball, then stopped mid-spell, crouching down to suggest discomfort near his hamstring region. The team physio came onto the field to attend to him.
Pathirana did attempt one more delivery after receiving treatment, but it was visibly restrained, he was clearly holding back from bowling at full speed. After a brief conversation with KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, the decision was made and Pathirana walked off. His debut had lasted less than 30 minutes.
A Debut That Was Months in the Making
Pathirana’s appearance on Saturday was one of the most anticipated moments of KKR’s IPL 2026 season. The slinger had been bought for a massive Rs 18 crore at the auction, and the franchise had been waiting to use him since the tournament began. However, a calf injury picked up during the T20 World Cup 2026 kept him sidelined for weeks.
At the T20 World Cup, Pathirana had left Sri Lanka’s game against Australia midway through a bowling spell and ultimately missed the remainder of the tournament. When IPL 2026 began, Sri Lanka Cricket held back his No Objection Certificate, requiring him to clear fitness tests on the calf issue before allowing him to join KKR.
The clearance only came four games into KKR’s campaign β a period during which the franchise lost every match they played. Even after receiving the NOC, Pathirana sat out several more games as the team managed his workload carefully. He finally got his chance in KKR’s 12th game of the season β and it ended in another setback.

KKR Win Despite Pathirana Blow
Despite losing their prized pacer within the first hour of the match, KKR put on an extraordinary performance to beat Gujarat Titans by 29 runs. New Zealand opener Finn Allen produced a breathtaking 35-ball 93, hitting 10 sixes and four boundaries as KKR posted 247 for 2 β their highest total of the season.
Allen, who was dropped on 14 and 33 by GT fielders, made the opposition pay heavily for those costly lapses. Angkrish Raghuvanshi contributed an unbeaten 82 and Cameron Green added an unbeaten 52 as the pair put on 108 runs off just 53 balls for the third wicket. GT dropped four catches in total across the innings, and all three KKR batters who scored half-centuries benefited from those missed opportunities.
GT were eventually bowled out for 218 in their chase, falling 29 runs short.

What Pathirana’s Injury Means for KKR Going Forward
In KKR’s case, the fitness setback of Pathirana is a big worry, especially as the business end of IPL 2026 draws near. The slinger was expected to give them some speed and off-spin at the end of the tournament as the franchise plays in a playoff race.
There has been no official word yet from KKR on the severity of the hamstring injury or how long Pathirana is expected to be out. But, with the recurring fitness issues that he had in 2025 and 2026, the team management will be hoping that this is a minor one. However, since the number of matches is limited, every game is significant, as is each bowler.
