IPL 2026: Kolkata Knight Riders Get Major Lift as Matheesha Pathirana Recovers from Injury

Matheesha Pathirana

Matheesha Pathirana is set to join Kolkata Knight Riders after Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed his NOC on March 20, clearing the pacer to participate in IPL 2026 following his recovery from a calf strain sustained at the T20 World Cup.

The clearance from SLC secretary Bandula Dissanayake ends weeks of uncertainty around the Rs. 18 crore signing, who had been sidelined since February 16 after breaking down mid-over against Australia at Pallekele. KKR had already lost Harshit Rana to a season-ending knee surgery and were forced to release Mustafizur Rahman on BCCI instruction, making Pathirana’s return arguably the most important fitness news of their pre-season.

How Pathirana Got Injured at the T20 World Cup 2026

The 23-year-old’s World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end on February 16, 2026, during a Group B match against Australia at Pallekele. He broke down just four deliveries into his opening spell, clutching his left leg in visible pain after bowling to Mitchell Marsh. Unable to walk unassisted, he was helped off the field by the team physio. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka bowled the remaining two deliveries of the over.

Initial reports pointed to a hamstring pull, but official confirmation from the ICC later identified the injury as a severe calf muscle strain. On February 18, the ICC Event Technical Committee approved Dilshan Madushanka as a like-for-like replacement, ruling Pathirana out of the remainder of the tournament. Sri Lanka were subsequently eliminated in the Super 8 stage.

Pathirana Completes Rehabilitation

Following the injury, Pathirana stayed back in Sri Lanka to undergo rehabilitation with the Sri Lanka Cricket medical team. Early assessments had estimated a recovery window of at least three to four weeks.

By March 10, Pathirana addressed growing fan speculation by posting an Instagram story confirming he was still in Sri Lanka, completing his rehab and had not yet travelled to India. Photos shared at the time showed him wearing Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) devices on his legs, a standard tool used in injury recovery.

As of March 20, Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake officially confirmed to PTI that Pathirana has finished his rehabilitation and has been granted the NOC required for IPL participation. KKR will decide on his place in the XI once they assess how he bowls in training.

Sources Say Reports of NOC Denial Were Premature

A report on March 19 suggested that Sri Lanka Cricket had denied Pathirana’s NOC to play in IPL 2026 due to his ongoing fitness concerns. However, the same day, separate reporting clarified that Pathirana had not actually submitted a formal NOC application at that point — the process was only set to be initiated once he met specific fitness benchmarks, particularly the ability to bowl a designated number of overs at full intensity.

SLC clearance was expected between March 25 and 27, just days before the tournament opener on March 28. The March 20 confirmation from Dissanayake appears to confirm that the process moved faster than anticipated.

Why Pathirana’s Return Matters so Much for KKR

KKR’s fast bowling resources were already under pressure before IPL 2026 began. Indian pacer Harshit Rana was ruled out of the entire season following knee surgery, and Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, acquired for Rs. 9.2 crore, had to be released from the squad on BCCI instruction. That left Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as KKR’s only established international pace option.

In Pathirana’s absence, KKR’s death-over bowling had drawn concern from analysts and fans alike. The Sri Lankan is widely regarded as one of T20 cricket’s most dangerous slinger-style pacers and was the primary reason the franchise invested so heavily in securing him from the Chennai Super Kings, who had released him after a difficult 2025 season. Dwayne Bravo, who previously mentored Pathirana at CSK and played a key role in his early IPL success, had since joined KKR as a mentor, another factor behind the franchise’s aggressive bid at auction.

If the Sri Lankan pacer is unavailable for the opening game, KKR’s overseas XI could see Blessing Muzarabani take his spot, with either Finn Allen or Tim Seifert filling the remaining overseas slot alongside Cameron Green and Sunil Narine.

Will Pathirana Play the IPL 2026 Opener vs the Mumbai Indians?

KKR open their IPL 2026 campaign against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29. With Pathirana now cleared by SLC, the question shifts to whether KKR’s own medical staff will green-light him for the first game after evaluating his bowling workload in training.

The franchise is reportedly confident Pathirana will be available and has been regularly updated on his progress. Given that he had already resumed bowling in training sessions, albeit not yet at maximum intensity, the expectation within the camp is that he will build up in the days before the tournament begins.

Earlier reporting had suggested KKR were hopeful he could feature at some point during the season, even if not from the opener, with some sources indicating the second half of the tournament as a more conservative timeline. The latest update, however, points strongly toward an earlier return.
