MS Dhoni is heading into IPL 2026 as the oldest active player in the tournament. At 44, the Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter is still competing in a format that increasingly favors youth and raw athleticism.

“It is very difficult. My fitness is on the way down, not the way up.”

The response landed hard on the Yellow Army packed into Chepauk. But seeing the crestfallen faces around him, the captain quickly added, “I can try,” and the stadium erupted. The two words were enough to send the crowd into a deafening roar that echoed across Chennai.

The effect the CSK captain has on younger players in the squad is one of the harder things to quantify but one of the most consistently noted by those who have worked alongside him.
