Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur took four wickets for 39 runs in his 4 over spell. This is Punjab Kings their fifth loss in a row that puts their playoff hopes in serious danger.

Mumbai Indians successfully chased a target of 201 runs with only one ball remaining. Tilak Varma anchored the innings and played with great calm under pressure. The chase started with Ryan Rickelton who scored 48 runs from 23 balls. He hit four boundaries and four sixes during the Powerplay. Shardul Thakur Makes History with Four-Wicket Haul
Shardul Thakur became the first Mumbai bowler in 15 years to take four or more wickets in a match against Punjab Kings. He took 4 wickets for 39 runs in his four overs. Shardul used cutters and cross-seam deliveries to trouble the Punjab batters on a dual-paced pitch.
Thakur took the wickets of Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Suryansh Shedge, and Marco Jansen. He bowled out both Prabhsimran and captain Shreyas Iyer in the same over.
The Mumbai bowling unit initially struggled as Punjab reached 100 runs in the 11th over. However, Shardul Thakur triggered a collapse where Punjab fell from 107 for 1 to 140 for 7. Likewise, Deepak Chahar took two wickets for 36 runs, including the early wicket of Priyansh Arya.

Punjab Kings Battle for Playoff Survival
Punjab Kings set a target of 200 runs for 8 wickets after being asked to bat first. Prabhsimran Singh was the top scorer with 57 runs from 32 balls. He reached his half-century in 29 balls and hit four sixes during his innings. Priyansh Arya also played well at the start, scoring 27 runs before Chahar bowled him with a knuckle-ball.
However, the Punjab middle order failed to build on this strong start. Captain Shreyas Iyer only made four runs before Shardul Thakur bowled him with a delivery that nipped back. Consequently, the team relied on a late surge from Azmatullah Omarzai to reach a par score. Omarzai smashed 38 runs from 17 balls, including four sixes.
Late contributions from Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett helped Punjab add 53 runs in the final three overs. Despite reaching 200 runs for the eighth time this season, Punjab could not defend the total. Therefore, they now face a must-win situation in their remaining two matches to stay in the race for the top four.
Mumbai Indians Show Strength Despite Early Elimination
Mumbai Indians entered this match knowing they were already out of the playoff race. Regular captain Hardik Pandya missed the game due to back spasms. Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav did not travel with the team for personal reasons. In their absence, Jasprit Bumrah led the team as captain for the first time in the IPL.
Bumrah expressed his happiness with the team’s performance, noting that they pulled back well after a fast start by Punjab. Tilak Varma also mentioned that playing at the international level helped him finish games better. He praised Will Jacks for his supporting role at the end of the chase.
For Punjab Kings, the loss is a “tough pill to swallow” according to Shreyas Iyer. The team was unbeaten in their first seven games but has now suffered a spectacular collapse. They currently sit in fourth place with 13 points. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians stand in ninth place with eight points in the points table.
