Punjab Kings (PBKS) made cricket history on Saturday, April 11, 2026, by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets at the New International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The Kings successfully chased a massive target of 220 runs, finishing at 223/4 with seven balls remaining in the second innings.
Young opening batter Priyansh Arya broke a long standing record previously held by Indian legend Virendra Sehwag in this high scoring match of the IPL 2026 season. This victory also established PBKS as the first team in T20 history to successfully chase a 200-plus target 10 times.
How Priyansh Arya Surpassed Sehwag’s PBKS Record in Mullanpur
The 24-year-old batter set a new team record for the most runs scored by a Punjab Kings batter in the first over of an IPL innings. Arya smashed 18 runs in the opening over against SRH spinner Harsh Dubey. He hit two boundaries and a six to immediately put the pressure on the Hyderabad bowling attack.
This achievement moved Arya past the legendary Virender Sehwag in the Punjab Kings history books. Sehwag had held the record since 2014 after scoring 16 runs in the first over of a match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Additionally, it took only 16 balls for Arya to score his half-century. This is the second fastest half century ever recorded by a PBKS player. He surpassed Nicholas Pooran’s 17-ball record from 2020, leaving him second only to KL Rahul, who famously reached the milestone in 14 balls in 2018. Arya finished his innings with 57 runs off 20 balls, including five fours and five sixes.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Record-Breaking Powerplay
Earlier in the day, Sunrisers Hyderabad put on a masterclass of aggressive batting after being asked to bat first. The opening pair, known as “Travishek,” consisting of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, added 120 runs for the first wicket in just over eight overs.
SRH amassed an incredible 105 runs in the first six overs, which is the highest powerplay score of the IPL 2026 season. Sharma made 74 runs off only 28 balls, which includes eight super sixes. Meanwhile, the Australian batsman, Travis Head, scored 38 runs from 23 balls.
However, Punjab Kings Shashank Singh bowled out both openers in the same over. Consequently, SRH finished their 20 overs at 219/6. While this was a large total, they scored only 99 runs in the final 12 overs after their blazing start.
Shreyas Iyer and PBKS Made History with 10th 200+ Chase
Punjab Kings approached the 220-run target with the opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. Their partnership made 50 runs in only 3.3 overs and finished the powerplay with 93 runs.
After the dismissals of Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, skipper Shreyas Iyer reached his half-century in 24 balls and finished unbeaten on 69 runs.
Iyer hit five fours and five sixes during his match-winning stay at the crease. He shared a crucial 69-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera to keep the chase on track. Therefore, PBKS remained in the lead throughout the second innings. Shashank Singh eventually hit the winning boundary to secure the six-wicket victory.
