Sanju Samson walked off the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday night unbeaten on 87 off 52 balls, having done what he has been doing repeatedly for Chennai Super Kings this season — winning matches almost on his own. The knock pushed him into the top five of the IPL 2026 Orange Cap table with 402 runs, displacing Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan in the process.
CSK chased down a target of 156 in just 17.3 overs, winning by 8 wickets with 15 balls to spare. It was a clinical performance, and Samson was at the centre of it from the first ball.
Samson’s Numbers Put Him Among the Season’s Best Batters
Samson now has 402 runs in ten innings this season at an average of 57.42 and a strike rate of 167.50, with two hundreds and one fifty to his name. Those numbers place him firmly in the conversation among the tournament’s best batters.
He joins KL Rahul, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the only batters to have crossed 400 runs in IPL 2026. Rahul leads the table with 445 runs, followed closely by Abhishek at 440, Klaasen at 425, and Sooryavanshi at 404. Samson sits fifth at 402.
Against DC, Samson reached his fifty off 32 balls and finished unbeaten on 87, hitting 7 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 167.30. The pitch was slow and gripped off the surface — conditions that troubled most batters — but Samson played as if on a completely different surface, adjusting his game without losing his attacking instinct.
A Difficult Start That Samson Has Long Put Behind Him
It is easy to forget that Samson began this IPL season with three single-digit scores. CSK traded Samson in at the cost of Ravindra Jadeja, making it a high-pressure move right from the start. Early failures only added to the scrutiny.
Since those opening struggles, Samson has scored three fifty-plus scores in seven innings, including the 87* against Delhi Capitals. The turnaround has been complete and convincing.
Former Australia captain Aaron Finch pointed out the weight of expectation Samson carried walking into a new franchise. Finch noted that two games in T20 cricket is nothing, and that going through a full season with ultra-consistency is extremely difficult, adding that the pressure on a marquee signing like Samson — especially after Jadeja was traded out — would naturally be significant.
Deep Dasgupta called this the version of Samson fans had been waiting years to see, consistent rather than just occasionally brilliant.
KL Rahul Retakes the Top Spot Despite Quiet Night
While Samson grabbed the headlines, KL Rahul reclaimed the Orange Cap top spot despite scoring only 12 runs against CSK, moving five runs ahead of Abhishek Sharma at the top of the table.
With SRH set to face Punjab Kings on Wednesday, both Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen will have a chance to move up to the top spot.
On the Purple Cap table, Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bengaluru leads with 17 wickets, followed by CSK’s Anshul Kamboj also on 17, with Kagiso Rabada third on 16.
For CSK, the win kept them in sixth place but left them just two points behind the four teams occupying second through fifth positions — very much in the playoff race.
