Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 103 runs on April 23, 2026, at the Wankhede Stadium, the biggest run difference to MI in T20 history. The CSK climax of 207/6 was the unbeaten 101 of Sanju Samson on 54 balls, and the Mumbai Indians had no hope of matching it, as they finished at 104 in 19 overs.

Samson Builds a Match-Winning Innings From the Start
Samson came early and set the mood immediately. He drove Jasprit Bumrah on a cover drive, delivered the first night boundary, and topped it with a whip off the pads of Hardik, unhindered. It was not a strength session, but built on witty cricket all the way round.
Samson made changes when CSK was losing wickets in the middle stage. Between eight and fifteen, he made only 15 runs out of 14 balls and saved his wicket, keeping the score in motion. As soon as the pressure was relieved, he changed gears altogether. Samson batted all six balls in the last over, and with three sixes and three fours, he made 31 runs in that over alone, having been bowled by first-season player Krish Bhagat. The second-highest score of CSK in the innings was only 22, which reveals how the entire innings was all about Samson. The bowlers in Mumbai were left without any reply. Hardik conceded 38 in two overs, and Mitchell Santner 44 in four overs. Bumrah was the only person who exercised some control, as he had 1 out of 31.
Hosein and Noor Ahmad Dismantle the Chase of Mumbai
In pursuit of 208, the response of Mumbai was nearly finished before it started. They lost three wickets in the first three overs at a very low cost of 11 runs. In the first over, Danish Malewar hit a duck, Quinton de Kock scored 7, and Naman Dhir scored nothing.
The mastermind of the collapse was Akeal Hosein. The left-arm spinner ended with 4/17 in four overs, with a wicket maiden in the powerplay. He played around-the-wicket on the left-handers, and his combination with Noor Ahmad (2/23) suffocated any chance of a revival.
Suryakumar Yadav scored 35, and Tilak Varma scored 37, but both were beaten by Hosein.
At the time of Varma being dismissed in the 12th over, MI were 84/4 and virtually out of the race. Eight of the eleven batters in Mumbai were sent back with single-digit scores. Spin took nine wickets, an IPL record at Wankhede Stadium.

What This Result Means for Both Teams in IPL 2026
The two teams entered this game at the bottom half of the IPL 2026 table. CSK came in fifth, Mumbai eighth. This outcome leaves Chennai in a much more favorable position in their quest for the playoffs and Mumbai with a more challenging road ahead.
To Samson, this innings solidified his position as one of the most valuable players in this CSK team. In the case of Mumbai, with their worst loss in T20 cricket, it poses some serious questions on the depth of the batting and how the team coped with quality spin bowling under pressure.
Chennai Super Kings will be returning home on Sunday, April 26, and play Gujarat Titans in the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Mumbai Indians, in the meantime, remain at the Wankhede and face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29.
