The IPL 2025 kickoff on March 22, and Punjab’s Captain, Shreyas Iyer, is ready to take on a new challenge ahead of IPL 2025. After leading the KKR to champions last year, Iyer is now taking responsibility for guiding the Punjab Kings to their first-ever IPL title.
His leadership experience and strong performance make him one of the key players for the PBKS’s IPL Campaign. But can Punjab Kings lift the IPL 2025 trophy under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer?
Shreyas Iyer first became the captain of Delhi Capital in 2018 after Gautam Gambhir resigned from captaincy at the mid-season. In 2020, he led DC to their first IPL final. His big moment came in the 2024 season when he led the KKR to win their 3rd IPL Title after 10 years.
“From the moment I was picked in the auction, my desire has been clear, Punjab Kings haven’t won the IPL yet, and my goal is to lift the trophy for them. That would be a historic achievement, and I want to make the fans happy and give them a reason to celebrate. A Punjabi celebration at the end of the season would be something special!” Iyer said
Furthermore, PBKS splurged handsomely on Iyer, making him the second most expensive in the IPL auction at INR 26.75 crore (USD 3.18 million approx).
One of the biggest advantages for Iyer is reuniting with Ricky Ponting, who has recently become head coach of Punjab for IPL 2025. Iyer and Pointing both worked together back in 2020.
Iyer has a huge respect for Ricky Pointing’s leadership and coaching style.
“I have had great experiences in the past with Ricky. He is someone who gives you that freedom, irrespective of your stature in the team. He involves everyone in the squad, from the captain to the youngest player,” Iyer expressed.
However, that is not all; Iyer has also expressed the desire to bat at No.3.
During a press conference, he said, “We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be No. 3.”
