Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Chennai Super Kings by 10 runs in the 27th match of IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 18, 2026. SRH posted 194/9 and then defended it with a disciplined bowling performance that left CSK stranded at 184/8 at the end of 20 overs.
CSK won the toss and chose to field first, which initially appeared to be the right choice. But Abhishek Sharma had other plans.
Abhishek Sharma and Klaasen Fire SRH to 194
Abhishek Sharma made a beautiful 59 out of only 22 balls to start the powerplay, and he made his fifty in 15 balls. His knock had six fours and four sixes and provided SRH with a platform that ought to have been sufficient. Heinrich Klaasen came in with a calculated 59 off 39 balls, adjusting his game to the past seasons of IPL. This season, Klaasen has changed to a more selective approach, and this has seen him score three fifties in six innings. He was especially successful against Noor Ahmad, with 24 of his runs off him at a rate of 185.
Bowling by CSK, however, brought things back. Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj and Gurjapneet Singh all bowled well in the middle and death overs. Kamboj completed with 3/22, and Overton with 3/37. Following the initial power play, forecasters had predicted SRH to hit 237. The CSK pacers made sure that never happened, and SRH was limited to 194 even after the scorching beginning.
Malinga and Reddy Dismantle CSK’s Chase
CSK were chasing 195 and were in a good position at 76/3 after six overs, having outscored SRH during the powerplay. They had seven wickets to play with and 84 to get in 60 balls, and it seemed enough to get the job done. What ensued was a methodical demolition by the bowling unit of SRH.

Eshan Malinga was the standout performer, returning figures of 3/29 from four overs and earning the Player of the Match award. He bounced out Ruturaj Gaikwad and used his ability to hit yorker lengths to account for Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan as CSK’s middle order crumbled. Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 2/31, while Shivang Kumar and Sakib Hussain each took one wicket. All four bowlers maintained economy rates of 8 or below, a collective effort that proved decisive.

Mhatre Injury Proves Costly for CSK
An injury to the teenage cricketer Ayush Mhatre derailed the chase of CSK. He was in good shape, making 30 out of 13 balls with a strike rate of 230.76 and five boundaries and a six, but he injured his left leg while responding to a quick single in the fourth over and had to be taken off. His departure created an apparent vacancy at the top of the CSK batting order. They only made 58 runs and lost four wickets in the next 8.4 overs after Mhatre left in the 4.2nd over with CSK at 62/1.
Shivam Dube also could not convert in the finisher position. CSK were favourites halfway through the chase, but failed to get the big hits when needed.
This win propels SRH to the fourth position in the IPL 2026 table. Their next match is against the Delhi Capitals on April 21. Meanwhile, CSK are still in the seventh position. They next play the Gujarat Titans on April 26.
