Adam Thomas Powers Surrey to Seven-Wicket Win Over Lancashire

Surrey vs Lancashire,

Adam Thomas struck an unbeaten 82 as Surrey chased down Lancashire’s total of 280 for 5 with seven wickets and 14 balls in hand at Sedbergh School on July 21, opening their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign with a win. An unbroken 126-run partnership between Thomas and Josh Blake off just under 13 overs settled the contest after Lancashire had set a target of 281 batting first.

Lancashire built their total around contributions from Keaton Jennings, Marcus Harris and Michael Jones after being sent in, while Surrey’s bowlers restricted the scoring through the middle overs before conceding pace late in the innings. Surrey’s batting lineup then overhauled the target with overs to spare, collecting four points on the tournament’s opening day.

Thomas and Blake Complete the Chase With Unbroken Stand

The result turned on the fourth-wicket stand between Thomas and Blake, which began after Rory Burns was trapped leg-before by Arav Shetty for five with Surrey on 159 for three. From that position, the two batters took control of the chase and put on 126 runs without losing another wicket, pulling the required rate down sharply as Lancashire’s bowlers struggled to find breakthroughs.

Thomas moved past fifty and went on to finish unbeaten on 82 from 76 balls, striking eight fours and a six along the way, while Blake made an unbeaten 59 off only 38 deliveries and hit three sixes, the last of which off George Balderson brought up the win. The pair singled out the bowling of Ollie Sutton, Barnard and Balderson in particular, taking 45 runs from three overs bowled by that trio as the match slipped away from Lancashire, and remarkably no bowler across the innings managed more than a single wicket.

Sibley and Patel Give Surrey a Platform to Build On

Before the finishing stand took shape, Dom Sibley and Ryan Patel had already put Surrey in a strong position at the top of the order. The fifty partnership arrived inside 12 overs, and both batters brought up individual half-centuries close together, with Patel reaching his mark nine balls quicker than Sibley did. By the midpoint of their innings, Surrey had raced to 123 for the loss of one wicket.

Patel was dismissed almost immediately after getting to fifty, caught behind off Balderson for 58, and Sibley followed six overs later, bowled while attempting to sweep Harry Singh for 65. Even though those dismissals slowed Surrey’s momentum briefly, the foundation the pair had laid meant Thomas and Blake were chasing a target that remained well within reach.

Lancashire’s Middle Order Rebuilds After a Slow Start

Lancashire’s innings depended heavily on a recovery through the middle order following a sluggish opening. Matty Hurst was bowled by Tiaan van Vuuren for just two inside the second over, and Josh Bohannon then added 79 alongside Jennings before falling to a diving catch from Sibley at deep midwicket off Yousef Majid for 40, leaving Lancashire at 98 for two at the halfway stage.

Jennings and Harris subsequently added 78 runs in 13 overs to lift the scoring rate considerably. Jennings was eventually out for 64, caught and bowled by Patel off the leading edge, while Harris departed for 60 after edging a drive through to Blake off Benji Floros.

Michael Jones remained unbeaten on 67 from 45 balls, combining with Arav Shetty for an unbroken 57-run stand that carried Lancashire past 280, with van Vuuren finishing as Surrey’s most economical bowler despite leaving the field injured after taking one wicket for 18 runs.
