Australia Announce 17-Man Squad for Pakistan T20I Series

Australia Announce 17-Man Squad for Pakistan T20I Series

Melbourne, January 20, 2026 – Cricket Australia named a 17-player squad for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan. Josh Inglis will captain the side in the absence of several key players who have been rested ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The series begins in February with matches scheduled across multiple venues.

The squad features two fresh faces making their international debuts. Jack Edwards and Beardman earned their first call-ups after strong performances in the Big Bash League season. Both players impressed selectors with consistent displays for their respective BBL franchises throughout the domestic T20 competition.

Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head will not travel for this series. The management decided to rest these senior players to keep them fresh for the upcoming World Cup. Steve Smith also misses out as he continues recovering from a recent injury.

Squad Composition and New Faces

Josh Inglis gets his first opportunity to lead Australia in T20 internationals. The wicketkeeper batsman has been part of Australia’s white-ball setup for the past couple of years. He takes over captaincy duties while regular skipper Mitchell Marsh focuses on preparation for bigger tournaments ahead.

Jack Edwards joins the team after hitting a lot of runs for the Sydney Sixers in BBL 15. The left-handed opener has been in great shape, scoring a lot of runs at the top of the order. His aggressive style of batting is perfect for T20, which is why national selectors were interested in him.

Beardman’s selection is a reward for his great season with the ball. The young pacer took wickets often during the BBL, showing good control and different types of bowling. The selectors liked him for the World Cup because he could bowl at different times during an innings.

Marcus Stoinis is back in the squad after missing the last series because he wasn’t fit enough. The all-rounder adds depth to the batting order and can bowl useful overs in the middle of the game. His experience will help younger players who are making their first appearances in this series.

Rested Players and World Cup Planning

It’s a good idea to give Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell a break because they have a lot going on. Both players have played in a lot of different formats this summer in Australia. Letting them rest now means they will be in great shape and ready for the World Cup.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood also get time off to deal with their work. Fast bowlers need to be carefully managed, so they don’t get hurt at important times. The selectors clearly prioritize having their best pace attack available for the Cricket World Cup rather than risking them in bilateral series.

Travis Head has been playing non-stop cricket across all three formats. The left-hander was part of Australia’s recent Test series and needed rest before the World Cup began. His absence gives other opening batsmen a chance to stake their claims in the International Cricket Series Updates happening worldwide.

Pakistan Tour Details

The three T20Is will be played across different cities in February 2026. There hasn’t been an official confirmation of the exact dates and locations yet, but sources say that matches could happen in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. Both cricket boards are now finishing up their security plans.

Pakistan has recently hosted several international teams without any problems, showing that it can plan safe tours. After a long break, Australia last played a bilateral series in Pakistan in 2022. This next series is part of the revival of regular cricket between the two countries.

Australia can try out different combinations on the tour before the World Cup. Team management can figure out what works best by trying out different batting orders and bowling partnerships. These experiments cannot happen during major tournaments where every game carries huge pressure.

Pakistan will field a strong squad despite this being a bilateral series outside major tournaments. Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi form the core of their T20 setup. The home team will be eager to make a statement against Australia before the World Cup begins.

What This Means for the World Cup

Australia’s squad selection shows they’re taking a long-term view rather than focusing only on immediate results. Resting senior players might weaken the team for this series, but strengthen their World Cup chances. It’s clear that the management thinks fresh legs are more important than winning every bilateral series.

The new players who are getting chances now could make it into the World Cup. If players do well in Pakistan, it will put pressure on big names to keep their spots. Competition for places always helps team standards improve across the board.

Josh Inglis, captaining this series, gives him valuable leadership experience at the international level. Even if he doesn’t lead in the World Cup, understanding captaincy helps any player read the game better. His growing role in Australia’s plans becomes obvious with this appointment.

The series also allows coaching staff to work with fringe players who might need to step up during the World Cup. Injuries happen at big tournaments, so it’s very important to have backup players who have played international cricket recently. This trip to Pakistan is a chance to get ready for situations like these.

In 2021, Australia won the T20 World Cup. In 2024, they made it to the semifinals. Even though they have changed players recently, they are still one of the best T20 teams in the world. The World Cup is coming up, and they have another chance to show that they are the best in the shortest format.
