BCB Names Salma Khatun as First Woman Selector for Bangladesh Women’s Team

Salma Khatun

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has selected Salma Khatun, an ex-captain of the national women’s side, as the first female selector of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team first female selector, marking a significant milestone in sports history.

She will be one of the three selectors at the panel, with chief selector Sazzad Ahmed Shipon and Sojol Chowdhury, who mostly looked after the age-group sides. This hiring shows the BCB attempting to institutionalize the concept of having highly regarded former players in positions of leadership.

β€œWe all had a short meeting where four to five important decisions were made at one time. One of them was the appointing of Salma Khatun as the first ever woman selector for our women’s national team and she will be working alongside Shipon, who is the head selector for the women’s side,” said Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, chairman of BCB’s media committee.

Quick Facts: Salma Khatun in Numbers

  • Has played 46 One Day Internationals and 95 Twenty20 Internationals for Bangladesh.
  • Ranked No. 1 T20I bowler for Bangladesh in 2014 and 2015.
  • Best T20I bowling performance of 4-6 against Sri Lanka.
  • BCB appointed the first female selector for the women’s panel

Salma Khatun: A Proven Leader

Salma Khatun was the captain of Bangladesh from 2008 to 2015 and has been considered a staple of women’s cricket in Bangladesh for a long time. Khatun was the ICC’s best bowler and the ICC’s best all-rounder for women’s cricket in 2014-15, shows that she contributed to the cause internationally. As an off-spinner and batter in the middle order, along with her experience of fulfilling captaincy duties, she is qualified to be a member of the selection panel.

β€œSalma Khatun has been a pillar of women’s cricket in Bangladesh. It is revolutionary to have someone of her quality involved in selection,” added Mithu.

Salma Khatun’s Playing Career

Salma Khatun, 35, is seen as one of the most successful women cricketers to represent Bangladesh. She represented the country as a player in 46 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 95 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and has taken over 80 wickets in this format.

An off-spin bowler and middle-order batter, she was the ICC’s top-ranked T20I bowler in the world at one point in 2014-15. Her best bowling figures of 4 for 6 against Sri Lanka were one of the more remarkable instances of women’s cricket in Bangladesh.

Salma has also captained the National side in a number of tournaments, including the Asia Cup campaigns, which were quite historic at the time, and made a substantial contribution to women’s cricket at home in Bangladesh.

Significance of Her Appointment

The appointment allows Salma Khatun to make a direct impact on team personnel, and the overall strategy for the team. Khatun will contribute to bridging the gap between the international game and the domestic cricket community.

There is no doubt that the wide-ranging experience and insights Khatun gained during her time in the homegrown game as a home grown representative, followed by Australia’s national team, provide greater levels of insight than any of the other selectors. In the selection cycle and talent identification framework in the future, Khatun will undoubtedly contribute positively.

Other BCB Updates

Along with Salma Khatun’s appointment, the BCB also announced that ex-national pacer Hasibul Hossain Shanto will join the men’s national selection committee, taking over the slot vacated by the recently resigned Hannan Sarkar, who is concentrating on coordinating coaching work. Shanto will be on the men’s selection committee with Abdur Razzak and Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu.

β€œYes, we considered her experience, involvement with the Bangladesh team, and the interview process she went through. She had been at the top level for Bangladesh for a long time and was obviously the natural choice,” Mithu said.

Looking Ahead

The squad has already been announced for the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2025. However, Khatun’s value in tracking reserve players and notifying selections domestically will be important. Having her on the panel will more than likely affect the nurturing of potential talent and the competitiveness of the women’s team in the long run.

By including Salma Khatun on the selection panel, the BCB has made history in cricket governance and normalization of cricket processes, aiding the ongoing goal of ensuring former players help shape the future of Bangladesh women’s cricket.

Amit Mishra’s Take:

Salma Khatun’s role as selector for the Bangladesh women’s cricket team is a lot more than a milestone; it is a declaration. Over many years, the women’s cricketers have been aiming for awareness, recognition, and opportunity. Having an able international cricketer like Salma impacting selection and building a bridge between women’s experience in the field and administration is a big deal.

Salma takes on a role whereby her influence on selection is merit and potential based, which allows players, parents, families, coaches, and supporters a little peace of mind in the few things that should be the guiding principles of selection; players who can perform, have talent, and have learned and exhibited knowledge from playing the game.

Now there is an opportunity to see, live and direct, Salma’s depth of knowledge at every level of cricket – domestic and international – and how it may affect the next steps for the team. Therefore, such a landmark decision raises one important question: are we witnessing the beginning of women in Bangladeshi cricket leadership?
