Just when the Gujarat Titans were hoping to turn their season around, a single desperate dive left a massive void in their squad. New Zealand’s dynamic all-rounder Glenn Phillips, renowned for his explosive batting and electric fielding, has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with a groin injury — and the timing couldn’t be worse.
Having yet to play a match this season, Phillips’ absence is more than just a bench loss; it’s a strategic setback for a team already reeling from Kagiso Rabada’s sudden departure.
What Is Glenn Phillips’s Injury?
During the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad, Glenn Phillips injured his groin. The match took place on 6th April, and Glenn Phillips played more as a substitute fielder.
Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a groin injury. He got hurt while trying to stop a boundary during the Gujarat Titans’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. Although he was only fielding as a substitute, the dive he made to save runs ended up causing the injury.
A groin injury happens when the muscles in the inner thigh or lower stomach area are strained or torn. This kind of injury is common in sports, especially when players make sudden movements or stretch too far.
Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury. A mild strain might heal in a couple of weeks, but a more serious one can take months and may even need surgery. Since Glenn Phillips has been ruled out for the entire season, his injury must be serious.
He has now returned to New Zealand to recover, and the Gujarat Titans have wished him a quick and full recovery.

When Did Glenn Phillips’s Injury Take Place?
This injury to Glenn took place on the 4th ball of the 5th over, and it didn’t look good straight away. Ishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy were batting at the crease, and they looked for a quick single.
Phillips, who was fielding in close, hurled the throw to the wicketkeeper but went down clutching his groin straightaway. The commentators on the live TV also stated that it didn’t look good at all.
Phillips didn’t have the proper fitness to field, and some of the other teammates came in and carried Phillips off the ground.
Gujarat Titans’ Problem With Foreign Players
Glenn Phillips being ruled out of IPL 2025 might not be as bad as the uncertainty over Kagiso Rabada. Rabada left the GT camp on 3rd April, and there has been no official information on his return.
According to sources, Rabada has returned to South Africa to solve a very personal problem. GT hasn’t signed any replacement in the hope of Rabada’s return.
With no Phillips and Rabada, GT has been limited to five foreign players: Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Karim Janat, and Gerald Coetzee.
Fans expect GT to name Glenn Phillips’ replacement soon, but any update on Kagiso Rabada has been hard to find. Currently, though, with GT in good form, they aren’t worried about injuries.
What Glenn Phillips’s Injury Means for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025
With Glenn Phillips being ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a groin injury, the Gujarat Titans are facing a tough challenge. While Phillips hadn’t played yet, his all-round skills, especially in fielding, were expected to boost the team.
Now, the Titans must find a replacement, which could disrupt their squad balance. This comes after they already lost Kagiso Rabada so the remaining overseas players will face added pressure. Phillips’ absence is a significant setback, and the team will need to adapt quickly to stay competitive in the tournament.
