India’s Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer Gets Injured During Third ODI Against Australia

During the third Aus vs India ODI, India’s new vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer, unfortunately suffered an injury to his left rib cage while fielding at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was immediately taken to the hospital for scans, and as per the initial diagnosis, he will be out of sports for a minimum of three weeks.

Here’s what we know so far about the Shreyas Iyer injury.

Aus vs India ODI: Shreyas Iyer Gets Injured

A big blow for the Indian Cricket team and fans living across the world as India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer sustained a painful injury to his left rib cage during the third and final Aus vs India ODI held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Iyer reportedly suffered an injury in the 34th over of Australia’s innings when he went for an extraordinary catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling.

Carey attempted to strike the ball down the ground but got a top edge that flew up in between the backward point and the deep third. Iyer ran back into a forward position at which he was playing on the backwards side, and, with the ball in view, threw himself down full length to make a wonderful catch. But, he fell right on his left, and in a moment, he was huddling his ribs together in agony. The physio of the team, Kamlesh Jain, came onto the field and took him off to get treatment.

The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) later reported that Iyer had gone to the hospital during the Aus vs India ODI, where scans and other assessment tests were conducted. The BCCI said in an official statement that he has been admitted to the hospital to be further assessed.

According to a report by PTI, the first diagnosis stated that Iyer was hit on the rib cage by a jerk, and he will be out of action at least three weeks. One of the BCCI sources stated that he will be required to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to be checked further. In case scans show a hairline fracture, it may take him a longer time to recover.

This injury has raised a question about whether Iyer will play the next series of ODIs between India and South Africa, which begins on November 30 in Ranchi. The same source was further adding that it is too early to tell whether he is going to be fit. Assuming it will take him three weeks to recover, it will be a matter of touch and go before the South Africa series.

Iyer was in good shape recently, making a good 61 in the second ODI in Adelaide in a new batting position. The 30-year-old has also been dealing with a back problem, and this problem has prevented him from playing red-ball cricket over the last six months.

Meanwhile, in between this, India won the third Aus vs India ODI, including the heroic comeback of the famous duo, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Sharma scored 121 runs, while Kohli scored 74 runs, winning the match by 9 wickets. However, Australia won the Aus vs India ODI series by 2-1, and will be preparing for the T20I clash starting from October 29.

Amit Mishra’s Take

As a cricket enthusiast, I felt bad watching Shreyas Iyer suffering a rib cage injury during the final Aus vs India ODI as he was in good form and contributing well for the team when needed the most. He should have kept the injury in mind before going for the catch to dismiss Alex Carey. His injury will certainly hit the team’s structure and batting lineup for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa on November 30 in Ranchi.

I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him in action as soon as possible.
