In the third T20I match between Australia and New Zealand, the skipper Mitchell Marsh led from the front to seal the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy by 2-0. Australia had already retained the title after the second T20I was washed out, leaving the Aussies with a 1-0 lead. However, in the third and final T20I match held in Mount Maunganui, Marsh scored 103 runs, leading the team to victory, where none of the batters performed well.
Letβs look at how the third T20 and over matches went for the Aussies and Mitch Marsh.
Third T20I β Marshβs Match-Winning Century
The third T20I held between Australia and New Zealand for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy was an interesting one as the Australian skipper, Mitch Marsh, stood as a lone warrior when his team needed him the most. Held at Mount Maunganui, Australia won the toss and elected to field first, and the decision turned out to be a good one as they were able to put extra pressure from the very first ball.
Australiaβs Sean Abbott picked three crucial wickets of Mark Chapman, Matt Henry, and Ben Sears, while Josh Hazlewood took two significant wickets of Devon Conway and Tim Robinson in the early phase of the first innings. Batting for 20 overs, New Zealand posted 156 runs, including 48 runs off 35 balls from Tim Seifert and 26 runs from Michael Bracewell. Meanwhile, Jimmy Neesham also contributed to the total score with his 18-ball 25 runs.

Coming into the second innings of the game, Australia were pretty confident while chasing 157 runs. The skipper, Mitch Marsh, had the pure intention of winning the game, but New Zealand had different plans. New Zealand bowlers struck early in the third over with the wicket of Travis Head. Following that, it was pure domination from Black Capsβ bowlers as they managed to pick wickets in every other over.
However, Mitchell Marsh batted like no other as Australia pursued New Zealand. Having struck two fours and a six at the very beginning, Marsh continued to strike on despite wickets falling around him. He hit two sixes and two fours in one over against Ben Sears, and made his half-century in a mere 21 balls.
Jimmy Neesham made an attempt to rescue New Zealand, taking four wickets, including Tim David, Alex Carey, and Marcus Stoinis, and ending with 4/26, but Marsh was unstoppable. Despite Jimmy Neeshamβs effort in demolishing Australiaβs batting lineup, Marsh did not stop hitting big shots even though his partners continued to fall and kept the scoreboard on the move.
Marsh reached his maiden T20I century on a mistimed pull shot and remained unbeaten on 103. Sean Abbott scored the winning boundary to bring Australia to 160/7 after only 18 overs, in pursuit of New Zealand’s 156/9. Australia won the game by four wickets and the series 2-0. For his exceptional performance in the series, Mitch Marsh was also awarded the player of the series for his much-needed 197 runs.

First T20I β Australia Take Early Lead
Australia winning the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy was not only supported by the third T20 match, where the skipper, Mitch Marsh, single-handedly led the team to victory. In the very first T20I match of the series, the situation was as similar as the third T20I as Aussies were again rescued by an 85-run innings from Mitch Marsh.
New Zealand batted first, but their openers did not start well. However, the number three batter, Tim Robinson, smashed 106 runs off 66 balls till the end of the innings. Besides him, Daryl Mitchell and Bevon Jacobs scored 34 and 20 runs, contributing to the score of 181 runs.
The second innings was all about Australia since their batters were in top-notch form. Along with the skipper Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, Matthew Short, and Tim David spoke through the bat. With the 85 runs scored by Mitch Marsh, Australia successfully chased the 182-run target in just 16.3 overs. Similarly, Mitch Marsh was awarded the player of the match for his heroic innings of 85 runs.
In the Aus vs NZ match, following the dominant 6-wicket win over New Zealand, Australia were at the top and were confident going into the second T20 match.
Second T20I β Match Washed Out
After such a dramatic end to the first T20I match between Australia and New Zealand, the second match did not end up as per the expectations. Having won the toss, New Zealand decided the field first. Batting first, Australia were in good momentum until the rain interrupted the match. In the 2.1 overs when Australia were on 16 runs with the loss of one wicket, the game had to be halted and later called as washed out, even though the match was already reduced to 9 overs per side.
Looking from the Aussiesβ point of view, it was a good result since they retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, but it was unfortunate for New Zealand as they had to end up in a disappointing manner.

Amit Mishraβs Perspective
As a cricket enthusiast, the T20I series held between Australia and New Zealand for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy turned out to be a thriller and exciting for both players and fans. As a cricket fan, I always love to see the match where some batters prove their worth in between controversies and criticism. Mitch Marshβs batting in the first and third T20 is a testament to his dedication to the role he carries. He lived by the role of captain and led from the front, especially in the third T20I match, where all the batters were falling to their knees.
It was a great series for the skipper, and I hope to see him score more in the coming days when Australia needs him the most.
