New Zealand Women vs South Africa Women T20I series

New Zealand Women sealed the five-match T20I series against South Africa Women with a game to spare, winning the fourth encounter by six wickets at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Sunday. The White Ferns chased down the target of 160 with nine balls remaining, finishing at 160 for 4 in 18.3 overs. The result gives New Zealand an unassailable 3-1 lead heading into the fifth and final match.

The series win was built on a combination of disciplined bowling and commanding batting, and both came together on Sunday night to produce another convincing home performance under the captaincy of Amelia Kerr.

South Africa Post a Competitive Total

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa posted 159 for 6 from their 20 overs. Sune Luus anchored the innings with a steady 30, while late contributions from the middle order helped push the total past the 150-mark. South Africa’s innings had its moments but lacked the acceleration needed to set a truly daunting target on what was a flat surface at Sky Stadium.

Jess Kerr was the pick of New Zealand’s bowlers, returning figures of 3 for 16. Her ability to extract swing and maintain pressure at the top of the innings set the tone for the rest of the attack. Rosemary Mair provided support at the other end as New Zealand managed their resources well across the innings.

Chloe Tryon was South Africa’s most threatening batter, though the Proteas struggled to build any lasting partnerships and ultimately fell short of what the pitch could have offered.

Devine Takes Centre Stage

New Zealand’s chase was defined by Sophie Devine. The veteran opener smashed 64 off just 34 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and four sixes, to steer the White Ferns to victory. It was a knock built on aggression and clean timing, and it put the result beyond doubt well before the final overs arrived.

Georgia Plimmer provided an opening partnership before Amelia Kerr came in and offered stability in the middle, contributing 31 in support of Devine’s dominance at the top of the order.

Although South Africa’s Chloe Tryon picked up two wickets to keep some pressure on the hosts, it was never enough to change the direction of the match. Brooke Halliday and Maddy Green ensured there were no scares in the closing overs as New Zealand crossed the line with nine balls to spare.

Series Context and What Comes Next

New Zealand came into the fourth match leading 2-1 after a strong recovery in the third game. South Africa had levelled the series in the second T20I, but the hosts responded well and have now won back-to-back matches to close out the series with one game still to play.

New Zealand’s head-to-head record against South Africa in women’s T20 internationals now extends further in their favour, with the White Ferns historically dominant in this fixture. Sunday’s result continued that trend and confirmed New Zealand as the stronger side across this series.

The fifth and final T20I will be played as a dead rubber, but both teams will use the occasion productively. For New Zealand, it is a chance to finish the home summer on a high and build momentum heading into their next international assignment. For South Africa, it is an opportunity to end the tour positively and give fringe players some game time before the squad returns home.

With Devine in this kind of form and Jess Kerr continuing to develop as a bowling force, the White Ferns look well-placed heading into a busy stretch of international women’s cricket.
