The Big Bash League (BBL), which is considered the prestigious and well-recognized T20 franchise league in Australia, is about to welcome a new face as India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to become the first capped male Indian player to play in the tournament. As per the different rumors and reports published by ESPNcricinfo, Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers are in talks to sign Ashwin for the upcoming season.

In addition to this, it should be noted that no Indian player has ever participated in the BBL, which itself is a history-in-the-making moment for the BBL and Ashwin himself.
As per the rules of BCCI, only retired players are allowed to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Several retired Indian cricketers notably played in the foreign T20 leagues, including renowned names like Dinesh Karthik, who played for Paarl Royals in the SA20; Ambati Rayudu, who played for St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL; and Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan, who played for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20.
Similarly, different reports have suggested that four franchises—Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers—are chasing Ashwin for the potential signing for the team, marking the significance of off-spinners in the tournament. However, among the four teams, Thunder and Hurricanes are reportedly at the front of the line in signing Ravichandran Ashwin.

On the other hand, Ashwin is expected to play a double-duty role this season, as he is likely to be featured both in ILT20 in the UAE and BBL, despite the schedule being overlapped. According to Cricbuzz, Ashwin has already registered himself for the ILT20 auction, which is scheduled for October 1.
However, it is yet to be confirmed whether Ashwin will play all games in both leagues or not since ILT20 will begin on December 2, while the BBL commences from December 14 to January 25, 2026.

The recent rumors of him playing the upcoming season of BBL and ILT20, despite an overlapped schedule, are what Indian cricket fans had not expected from him. From my point of view, the inclusion of Ashwin in the BBL is historic since no capped Indian player has ever played the tournament.
With this, he will become the first Indian male capped player in history to play BBL. In addition to this, his registration in ILT20 also seems to be legit, as he is someone who cannot stay away from cricket for a long time, with the quality of gameplay he brings to the field.
