Scotland crush Netherlands by 9 wickets in tri-series opener

Scotland vs Netherlands T20I 2026

Scotland Women made a dominant start to the T20I Tri-Series in Edinburgh on Thursday, May 28, beating the Netherlands by 9 wickets with 31 balls to spare. Half-centuries from Katherine Fraser and Darcey Carter, combined with Kirstie Gordon’s three-wicket haul, gave Scotland a convincing win in the opening match of the series that also features Bangladesh.

Netherlands elected to bat first but never fully settled into the game. Scotland controlled large portions of the match with disciplined bowling and then finished it off quickly and comfortably with the bat.

Gordon and Scotland’s Bowlers Keep Netherlands in Check

Netherlands started brightly. Opener Heather Siegers was particularly aggressive in the early overs, hitting seven boundaries in a rapid 32 off just 16 balls. At 47 for 1 after four overs, the visitors looked in a solid position.

However, Kathryn Bryce removed Siegers, and the momentum shifted. Skipper Babette de Leede and Robine Rijke steadied things briefly, adding 22 together, but the middle order fell apart. Three wickets fell for just 9 runs in a short space, leaving Netherlands struggling at 78 for 5 in the 11th over.

Kirstie Gordon was the standout bowler, taking 3 for 27 on her first T20I appearance for Scotland after previously representing England at the 2018 T20 World Cup. Her ability to pick up key wickets in the middle overs kept a cap on the Netherlands innings at a critical phase.

Rijke and Frederique Overdijk put on a 53-run stand to steady the innings, but the run rate slowed sharply during that period. Rijke top-scored for Netherlands with 46 before falling late in the innings. Katherine Fraser removed Overdijk for 22. Netherlands eventually closed on 141 for 8 from their 20 overs.

Carter and Fraser Give Scotland a Flying Start in the Chase

Scotland’s chase of 142 never looked in doubt. Carter and Fraser opened the batting and put on an explosive partnership from the first over. Carter in particular went after Isabel van der Woning early, hitting four boundaries in the opening three overs as Scotland moved to 28 in quick time.

The momentum continued to build. In the fifth over, Fraser found her range and hit three consecutive boundaries off Woning. One over from van der Woning in the match cost 29 runs — including four boundaries, wides and a no-ball — which effectively ended any contest.

Carter brought up her fifty off 33 balls in the tenth over, with Scotland cruising at 94 for no loss at that stage. The 100-run opening stand came up shortly before Overdijk finally dismissed Carter for 55 in the 11th over. That was the only breakthrough Netherlands managed.

Fraser continued without trouble and completed her half-century off the second ball of the 15th over. Kathryn Bryce then finished it off with a boundary three balls later. Scotland reached 144 for 1 in 14.5 overs, winning by 9 wickets.

Scotland Set Strong Marker Ahead of Rest of Tri-Series

This result sends a clear message early in the tri-series. Scotland were dominant across all three departments — fielding, bowling, and batting — without ever looking stretched. The margin of victory left little room for argument.

Fraser was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 56 and the wicket of Overdijk. Gordon’s return to T20I cricket with Scotland was equally impressive. With Bangladesh also part of the tri-series, Scotland will be looking to carry this form through the remaining fixtures in Edinburgh.
