From 431 Runs to Shock Defeat: How South Africa Still Scripted ODI History vs Australia

South Africa cricket team celebrating their victory against Australia

Australia fired off a pyrotechnic display of batting at Mackay, piling up a jaw-dropping 431/2 on the back of centuries from Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green. Left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly then produced a five-for as South Africa were bundled out for 155.

Remarkably, the Proteas’ 276-run shellacking didn’t matter – South Africa had already sealed the three-match series 2-1 thanks to victories by 98 and 84 runs earlier in the week. This dramatic turnaround and the host of records that tumbled underpin one of the most compelling ODI stories of 2025.

[REPORT] Match Highlights

Australia’s batting was really strong and bold. Openers Head and Marsh made a strong start with a big 250-run partnership.

Head scored 142, hitting five sixes, and Marsh made a quick 100, setting up the stage for Green’s fireworks. The tall player ran fast to score a hundred in 47 balls and ended with 118 not out, hitting eight sixes.

Alex Carey scored 50 not out as Australia hit 18 sixes in total, reaching their second-highest ODI score. It was the first time that three Australian batters got hundreds in the same ODI game.

The Proteas’ attempt fell apart right away. At 50 for four after nine overs, they were struggling, and Dewald Brevis’ quick 49 only postponed the outcome.

Connolly, in his first game of the series, took 5 wickets for 22 runs, helping to bowl out South Africa. The 22-year-old is now the youngest Australian to get five wickets in ODIs, breaking Craig McDermott’s record from 1987.

His bowling was the best by an Australian spinner in one-day games. After everything was done, Australia won by a big 276 runs.

[TRENDING] Early Dominance and Series Win

Lost in the Mackay avalanche is how South Africa had already secured the series. The opening match in Cairns belonged to the visitors.

Veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj produced a career-best 5-33 as Australia collapsed from 60 without loss to 89 for six. Captain Mitchell Marsh held out with a fighting 88, but Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi wrapped up the tail, bowling Australia out for 198.

Earlier, Aiden Markram (82), Matthew Breetzke (57) and Temba Bavuma (65) had powered South Africa to 296/8. The spin-friendly wicket allowed part-time bowler Travis Head to take 4-57, but South Africa’s total proved unassailable and they won by 98 runs.

Two days later, in Mackay, South Africa again outplayed Australia. Batting first, the Proteas reached 277 thanks to Breetzke’s 88 and Tristan Stubbs’ 74. Ngidi then tore through the Australian line-up with 5-42 as the hosts were dismissed for 193, handing South Africa an 84-run victory and an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Green’s four catches equalled an Australian ODI record for a non-wicketkeeper, but it was a small consolation. By the time Australia’s batting fireworks arrived in the dead rubber, South Africa had already pocketed their fifth successive bilateral ODI series against the Aussies.

[WHAT’S HAPPENING] Records and Milestones

The Mackay mauling rewrote the record books. Australia’s 431/2 was their second-highest ODI total and just the third time a team has passed 430 in one-day internationals.

Head, Marsh and Green became the first Australian trio to record centuries in the same ODI innings. Connolly’s spell delivered multiple milestones: at 22 years and two days, he is the youngest Australian to claim an ODI five-for; his 5/22 are the best bowling figures by an Australian spinner; and he is the first Australian spinner to bag a five-for against South Africa.

On the South African side, young opener Matthew Breetzke continued his meteoric rise. His 57 in Cairns took his tally to 290 runs in his first three ODI innings, breaking England’s Nick Knight’s long-standing record of 264 and making him only the fourth player to score 50-plus in his first three ODIs.

Maharaj’s 5-33 in the series opener was his first ODI five-wicket haul, while Ngidi’s 5-42 in the second match showcased South Africa’s depth in pace. Green equalled Australia’s record for most outfield catches in an ODI with four grabs.

These statistics illustrate how the series was littered with notable achievements from both sides.

[UPDATE] Legacy and Perspective

This exciting series showed how cricket can be surprising. Australia’s big finish in the last game will stay in fans’ minds like a summer storm, but the Proteas’ strong start won them the trophy.

They were able to spin better than Australia in Cairns and bowl better in Mackay, showing a strong team with skill and spirit. Winning five times in a row against Australia shows that South Africa is really good at white-ball cricket.

Amit Mishra’s Thoughts

I notice the difference between one person’s great ideas and the success of a group. The Australians broke records but lost the match, while South Africa, even after their biggest ODI loss, enjoyed another series win.
