Steve Smith Disputes Third Umpire’s Call on Virat Kohli’s Catch

Steve Smith Kohli catch controversy

It’s India vs. Australia and there would be no controversy? Well, that is impossible. Starting from the 1st Test controversy has been a major focus of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

With so much at stake, Virat Kohli’s catch by Steve Smith, in the 1st ball of the 1st innings of the 5th Test, came into question.

Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy went so high that the media had to take a foot in and explain the scenario. It was a tough catch, which was palmed off by Steve Smith to Marnus Labuschagne. Joel Wilson, the third umpire had his work cut out.

Incident Overview

Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy took place in the 1st innings of the Sydney Test match. It was the 5th ball of the 7th over when the incident took place. Interestingly, it was the same type of delivery that caused Kohli trouble.

Scott Boland, who was breathing fire, delivered the ball which came in and left Kohli to take the outside edge. As the ball was dipping on Steve, he parried it with the help of his fingers to Marnus Labuschange.

All of the Australian players and fielders started to celebrate the catch with Kohli unmoved. Upon viewing the incident, the on field umpire took it upstairs only to declare it not out.

The Controversial Catch

There has been some controversy in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, when we talk about catching and decision-making at the same time.

This incident was between Kohli and Steven Smith, who were believed to have taken the catch, while umpires had other views to say about the catch taking.

Smith, who was field closer in the slips, couldn’t get hold of it and scooped it up to his slip partner Marnus, who took it very easily. Saikat and Gough, the on-field umpires, immediately took it to the 3rd umpire. Remember there is no soft signal rule so the decision was all in the hands of Wilson.

Umpire’s Decision

The big break in Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy came when the third umpire decided in the favor of India. There were divided opinions when the decision came out.

But being in the 3rd umpire chair, Wilson didn’t have any substantial evidence to give it out. As the camera angles weren’t clear about Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy, the decision had to come down as out.

It was evident that the Australian fielders weren’t too happy with the decision; they had to accept it and move forward with the game. Thankfully, Kohi didn’t do much damage with the willow to haunt with the decision being overturned.

Steve Smith’s Response

During the lunch break, when Steve Smith was asked about the catch, he openly said that he had caught it. The world cup winner stated that his fingers were underneath the ball and he had scooped it.

Talking to Fox Cricket, Smith said 100% but the third umpire has made his decision and that they will move ahead with it. Interestingly, Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy was handled so professionally by Steve Smith. Besides this, the chances did come through and Smith held on to many in the game.

Moving Forward

Moving forward with the 5th Test match after Steve Smith and Kohli’s catch controversy, India doesn’t look in a very good position with the willow in hand.

Like in all series, they have once again struggled to find their form with the willow. What’s new is the fact that the Sydney pitch has been spicy and provided assistance for more than 30 overs now.

By the time lunch arrived, India scored 57/3 with Kohli surviving through to lunch with that controversial decision. It is important to see how the middle order of India plays.
