Host Zimbabwe Upped Their Game, Afghanistan Fell Away

Zimbabwe thrived against Afghanistan on day one of the one-off Test at Harare Sports Club, as Brad Evans took five wickets. Also, a strong partnership between Ben Curran and Nick Welch put Zimbabwe in a commanding position in the ZIM vs Afghanistan match.

Evans stole the show on his return to the Test side after more than two years; Afghanistan started positively after losing the toss, as Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 37 and Abdul Malik scored 30 as the visitors reached 77-2. However, Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling from Evans and Blessing Muzarabani caused a dramatic collapse as Afghanistan lost their remaining wickets for just 50 runs, all out for 127. Evans took five wickets for just 22 runs from 57 balls, and Muzarabani took three wickets, giving Zimbabwe firm control of the ZIM vs Afghanistan match.

Evans Breaks Zimbabwean Bowling Record

The undertaking by Evans gave a new Zimbabwean Test record of 5 wickets at a mere 11 runs, surpassing the former record of 5-27 by Heath Streak against the West Indies in Port of Spain, two decades earlier. The 28-year old Evans in his post-match comments took time to reflect, saying Heath was an icon of Zimbabwe cricket, thus, improving his figures makes my achievement even greater. This record performance was the highlight of domination of Zimbabwe in the first session of the ZIM vs Afghanistan Test.

Afghanistan’s Top Order Struggles

Their top order collapsed, after Afghanistan lost their opening partnership. The second wicket between Gurbaz and Malik was the only meaningful partnership of 65-run stand because all the other batting lines were under pressure throughout the game and failed. The only relatively successful  Afghan bowler was a debutant, Ziaur Rahman (2-35), yet the experienced batsmen of Zimbabwe ensured that tourists saw no chance to overpower them.

Curran and Welch Steady Zimbabwe’s Innings

Zimbabwe retorted with the first wicket falling cheaply with Brian Bennett being out on only 6 on the ninth run scored. The reaction of the home team was at first a bit shaky, and then a serene partnership took place between Ben Curran who batted 52 and Nick Welch who batted 49. The second wicket partnership of 97 runs between the two led to gradual but competent taking Zimbabwe to a 130-2 lead at the end of the day, three-run ahead and eight wickets remaining, with Zimbabwe ahead.

Welch fell just short of his fifty, out one short, whilst Curran’s patience and shot selection brought five fours. Veteran Brendan Taylor chipped in a quick 18 after Welch was out to keep the momentum on Zimbabwe’s side. Their approach showed a mixture of caution and aggression, especially against Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling attack, which exhibited some good debutant skills. This performance highlighted the hunger of Zimbabwe to brush against a dreadful history of only one Test victory in their previous eight tests matches and to be well on top of the ZIM vs Afghanistan Test match.

Tactical Analysis: How Zimbabwe Controlled the Day

The ZIM bowlers told the story of day one of the Test between ZIM vs Afghanistan. Evans’ five-wicket haul annihilated the Afghan middle and lower order, while Muzarabani’s consistent pace aided the line of attack. Afghanistan’s inability to create any substantial partnerships or adapt their game to the seamer friendly conditions saw them heavily contribute to their collapse. Zimbabwe made most of both the pitch conditions, as well as the early breakthroughs, allowing their batters to set up a strong base for Day 2.

Afghanistan’s batting inefficacy was laid bare by their failure to rotate the strike or deal with disciplined lines. Only Gurbaz and Malik resisted, while the lower-middle order simply crumbled under pressure. Tactical planning and execution of the ZIM bowlers was the real difference throughout the first innings, and the host’s dominance, in the first Test of the ZIM vs Afghanistan series, is shown.

Looking Ahead: Day 2 and Beyond

In the following day of play, Zimbabwe will want to build upon their lead, to put pressure on Afghanistan’s batting line-up early on. The partnership of Curran and Welch has provided Zimbabwe a sound foundation from which to push for a sizable first-innings advantage. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will need to regroup and build on their middle-order performance to ensure they can pose a competitive challenge to the hosts in the ZIM v Afghanistan series.

Amit Mishra’s Take

On Day 1 of the one-off Test at Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe outplayed Afghanistan. After a two-year hiatus, Brad Evans achieved a remarkable return with a record five wickets for only 22 runs, pushing Afghanistan to collapse, being bowled out for 127. Afghanistan offered brief resistance with Rahmanullah Gurbaz (37) and Abdul Malik (30), but the middle-order disintegrated. Zimbabwe’s response included Ben Curran, with 52, and Nick Welch, with 49, were responsible for a significant 97-run partnership that saw Zimbabwe to 130/2 at stumps – three runs in front and with eight wickets in the shed. Overall, Zimbabwe was well on top and in control of this ZIM vs Afghanistan Test.
