Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando have each been fined 25% of their match fees following a physical confrontation during the opening day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.
The International Cricket Council also added a demerit point to both players’ disciplinary records after reviewing the incident, which occurred shortly after Jaiswal’s dismissal on Sunday.
What Happened During the Confrontation
Asitha dismissed Jaiswal off the final ball of the 17th over on the first morning, and the batter initially began walking toward the dressing room. He then changed course and moved toward Asitha, apparently reacting to comments from the celebrating Sri Lanka huddle, where the bowler stood as the central figure.
An ICC statement described the sequence as a confrontation and noted that Jaiswal approached Fernando and the two exchanged words before their heads made contact.
Broadcast footage told a somewhat different story from the official version. The visuals showed Jaiswal turning and walking directly toward Asitha, who took only a small step in response. Jaiswal then leaned his helmeted head toward the bowler, and Asitha did not retreat at that moment. The footage indicated Jaiswal had initiated the physical contact, even though the ICC statement framed the incident as a mutual exchange.
Charges and Match Fee Penalties
Match officials charged both players under Article 2.12 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players and player support personnel, a Level 1 offence. This level carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
Neither Jaiswal nor Asitha had a similar offence on record involving a demerit point over the preceding 24 months, a factor that appears to have shaped the fines toward the lower end of the permitted range.
The Level 1 sanction means both players avoid a formal hearing and remain available for the rest of the match. Repeat offences within a two-year window typically draw harsher scrutiny, so the incident will now sit on file for both players going forward.

Context of the Colombo Test
Jaiswal had scored 45 runs off 53 balls when Asitha removed him, with India’s total reading 66 for 2 after the visitors won the toss and chose to bat first. Asitha went on to dismiss Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja later in the day, and finished among the more successful bowlers on the opening day. India closed the first day at 300 for 5, and built a platform that set up the rest of the Test.
India currently lead the two-match series 1-0, having won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs. The Colombo Test therefore carries added significance, since a positive result would hand India a series win on Sri Lankan soil.
The on-field friction between Jaiswal and Asitha added an early talking point to a match that already carried series-defining stakes, though the match fee penalties are expected to close the matter without further disciplinary action from either board.
