England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith will miss the remainder of the county cricket season after sustaining two finger injuries during England’s third Test match against Pakistan at Edgbaston.
Smith dislocated his left ring finger while keeping wicket after lunch on the second day. Subsequent medical scans also revealed a crack in his thumb. Doctors confirmed that Smith needs no further treatment other than rest.
What It Means for Surreyβs Division One Position
This injury deals a major blow to Surrey County Cricket Club as they fight to avoid relegation from Division One of the County Championship. Surrey currently stand sixth in Division One, holding a 21-point cushion above the relegation zone with two matches remaining in the season.
Surrey officials had hoped Smith would return for their crucial fixture against fellow relegation strugglers Glamorgan at the Kia Oval on Tuesday. However, the injury rules Smith out for the final two games.

Who Will Replace Jamie Smith
According to Surrey’s official match preview for their County Championship fixture against Glamorgan, Dan Lawrence returns to the squad following his involvement with the England Test team. Surrey’s primary wicketkeeper Ben Foakes will continue behind the stumps, while backup keeper-batter Josh Blake is also included in the squad.
Smith Scores 69 Runs Despite Injury at Edgbaston
The injury happened as Smith kept wicket to bowler Ollie Robinson during the second day of the Test match. Despite the pain, Smith still walked out to bat in his normal number seven position during England’s first innings. He scored a valuable 69 runs to strengthen England’s total.
However, Smith could not take the field during Pakistan’s second innings. Teammate Jordan Cox took over the wicketkeeping duties in his place. Smith did not need to bat again on the fourth day as England successfully chased down 130 runs to complete their victory.

Surrey Escape Pitch Penalty Following Yorkshire Victory

Alongside the injury news, Surrey received positive updates regarding an off-field pitch investigation. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and The Cricket Regulator will not charge Surrey over the Kia Oval pitch used during their one-wicket victory against Yorkshire earlier this month.
Players described the pitch as a “roulette-wheeler” because the surface behaved unpredictably throughout the match. The three-day match saw intense action on the second day, when teams played parts of all four innings and lost 23 wickets in total.
Under current ECB rules, officials can strip a team of all match points if inspectors rate the pitch “below average or worse”. If regulators had punished Surrey, the club could have lost all 19 points earned from the Yorkshire win. Escaping the penalty gives Surrey vital relief as they enter the final stages of the Championship campaign.
