Jay Shah Breaks Silence on Bangladesh–Pakistan Drama Before T20 World Cup 2026

ICC chairman Jay Shah has spoken publicly for the first time about the controversy that threatened to derail the T20 World Cup 2026 before a single ball was bowled. Speaking at the Indian Business Leader Awards in Mumbai days after India lifted the title, Shah delivered a pointed message without naming any team directly, asserting that no country or team stands above the International Cricket Council as an organisation.

The tournament, which concluded on March 8 with India beating New Zealand in the final to claim a record-extending third T20 World Cup title, was shadowed in its build-up by a series of diplomatic standoffs involving Bangladesh and Pakistan that at various points put the entire event in doubt.

How the Crisis Unfolded

The trouble began when Bangladesh announced it would not travel to India for their T20 World Cup matches, citing security concerns. The decision came in the wake of tensions surrounding Mustafizur Rahman’s release from the Indian Premier League due to threats from several groups amid anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh. Despite repeated assurances from the ICC, Bangladesh held firm on their position and refused to participate.

The ICC responded by removing Bangladesh from the tournament and replacing them with Scotland in Group C. The decision was significant but not without consequences. Pakistan, in an apparent show of solidarity with Bangladesh, escalated the situation further by first threatening to boycott the entire 20-team tournament, accusing the ICC of being unfair to Bangladesh.

When that threat subsided, Pakistan raised another: they would participate in the tournament but would not take the field for the marquee group-stage match against India, scheduled for February 15 in Colombo. The prospect of India versus Pakistan not happening at a World Cup sent shockwaves through the cricket world and threatened one of the most commercially valuable fixtures in the sport.

The standoff eventually resolved after the ICC confirmed that Bangladesh would face no sanctions for withdrawing from the tournament. The governing body also offered Bangladesh the hosting rights for a future ICC event, widely expected to be the next Under-19 World Cup. Following this compromise, Pakistan reversed course and agreed to play. India won that match by 61 runs, extending their record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups to eight wins from nine meetings.

Shah’s Response

Addressing the pre-tournament drama at the awards ceremony, Shah was careful not to name Bangladesh or Pakistan directly. His remarks were nonetheless unambiguous in their intent.

“This ICC World Cup was very important because there was a lot of chatter before the start of the tournament about whether certain teams would participate and how the World Cup would go ahead. As ICC chairman, I can say that no team is bigger than the organisation and no single team makes an organisation. An organisation is a combination of all teams,” Shah said.

The statement was a clear signal that the ICC under Shah’s leadership does not intend to allow individual member nations to hold the organisation to ransom over participation decisions, regardless of the political or diplomatic pressures involved.

Shah transitioned from his role as BCCI secretary, a position he held from 2019 to 2024, to become ICC chairman, and this was his first public comment on one of the most turbulent pre-tournament periods in recent World Cup history.

Record Viewership Despite the Drama

Shah also used the occasion to highlight the commercial success of the tournament, which he said broke viewership records across the board. According to Shah, the T20 World Cup 2026 recorded 7.2 million concurrent viewers for the first time in cricket history. The India versus Pakistan match in Colombo became the most-watched T20 match in ICC event history, with viewership in India alone crossing 500 million.

“The World Cup has shattered all viewership records. For the first time in history, we recorded 7.2 million concurrent viewers. All records were broken in overall viewership,” Shah said.

He also took the opportunity to praise the performances of associate nations throughout the tournament, several of whom pushed full member teams to the limit.

The USA gave India a hard contest, the Netherlands put Pakistan under pressure, Zimbabwe defeated Australia, and Nepal pushed England close. Shah said these performances were a strong sign of the sport’s growth beyond its traditional strongholds.

A Message for India’s Champions

Shah concluded his remarks with a direct message aimed at India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir, both of whom were present at the ceremony. The message was a reminder that sustained success in cricket requires long-term planning and that the work does not stop with a title.

“Slipping from the top to the bottom takes only months, while climbing from the bottom to the top takes years. Keep working hard and keep winning awards. When I was in the BCCI, I had planned till the 2028 Olympics. Now I am in the ICC, and others are in charge at the BCCI. All of you should prepare for 2030, 2031 and even 2036,” Shah said.

The reference to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is significant given that cricket is set to make its Olympic return at those Games. Shah, who played a central role in lobbying for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics during his time at the BCCI, is now in a position at the ICC to shape how the sport approaches that milestone globally.

What Comes Next

The T20 World Cup 2026 may have ended on a high with India’s title defence, but the Bangladesh and Pakistan row has left unresolved questions about how the ICC manages future events in the subcontinent.

The decision to grant Bangladesh hosting rights for a future event as part of the resolution to the crisis will be watched closely by other members, with some observers noting that it could set a precedent for how teams negotiate with the governing body when disputes arise.

For now, Shah’s public statement signals that the ICC intends to present a firm front on such matters going forward. The organisation’s position, as he framed it, is that the collective is always greater than any single member, and that principle will guide decisions regardless of the political weight a particular country carries within the sport.
