Joseph Eckland’s Unbeaten 68 Guides Gloucestershire to Victory Over Northamptonshire

Eckland's Unbeaten 68 Powers Gloucestershire Past Northants

Joseph Eckland held his nerve through a tense run chase and steered Gloucestershire to a three-wicket win over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Cheltenham.

Chasing 309 for victory, Gloucestershire got home with four balls to spare as Eckland finished unbeaten on 68 off 74 balls, anchoring the innings after early momentum from the top order began to fade under pressure from the Northants bowlers.

Bracey and Bancroft Lay the Platform for Gloucestershire’s Chase

Gloucestershire’s pursuit started with real intent. James Bracey and Cameron Bancroft put on 99 runs in just 14 overs, cashing in with 17 boundaries between them and giving the hosts the fast start they needed. Bracey reached fifty off 37 balls before he pulled a delivery from Gus Miller straight to deep midwicket, ending a brisk innings of 56.

Bancroft continued at a steadier pace, bringing up his half-century off 58 balls with a boundary before falling to Luke Procter. Oliver Price then added 43 with Bancroft, but Northants hit back through Procter, who accounted for both Price and Bancroft in quick succession. A run-out involving Joe Phillips left Gloucestershire at 180 for 4 in the 31st over, handing the momentum back to the visitors at a crucial stage of the match.

Eckland and Ahmed Rebuild the Innings Under Pressure

With the chase hanging in the balance, Eckland found a partner in Daaryoush Ahmed, and the pair added 70 runs for the sixth wicket to drag Gloucestershire back into contention. Ahmed played the aggressor, striking five fours and two sixes during a rapid 48 off 38 balls before he holed out at deep backward square off Dominic Leech.

Leech struck again soon after, trapping Ed Middleton lbw without scoring, and Northamptonshire briefly threatened a late twist. Eckland, though, refused to be shaken. He brought up his fifty off 66 balls and stayed composed as wickets fell around him, absorbing pressure while keeping the required run rate within reach through the closing overs.

Late Stand With Rao Seals the Result for Gloucestershire

Eckland found his final ally in Aman Rao, who came in and played a calm, unbeaten knock of 16 off 14 balls. The pair saw off the Northants bowling attack without further alarm, guiding Gloucestershire past the target with four balls remaining.

Earlier in the day, Northamptonshire had posted 308 thanks to half-centuries from Nathan McSweeney and George Bartlett, who put on 73 runs in 13 overs during a fourth-wicket stand that lifted the visitors from a shaky start.

McSweeney struck 79 off 63 balls before losing his leg stump to Ahmed, while Bartlett followed with 75 off 63 balls, including two sixes, before he was caught attempting a slog-sweep. Ahmed finished with career-best figures of 4 for 56, and his double impact with bat and ball proved decisive in a match that swung several times before Gloucestershire finally closed it out.

The result keeps Gloucestershire firmly in contention in Group A, while Northamptonshire, already facing long odds for the knockout stages, will look to their net run rate for any remaining hope of progression in this year’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
