Lancashire held their nerve to beat Durham by three runs at Farington on Saturday. The result kept their Metro Bank One-Day Cup title defence on track. The champions squeezed Durham to 166 for 9 in a tense finish that swung on the final over, and defended a modest target of 170.
Durham looked set for victory when Hollie Armitage and Bess Heath put on 71 runs for the fourth wicket, and pushed the score to 140 for 3 in the 32nd over. But Kate Cross, playing one of her last matches before retirement, returned figures of 3 for 24 on a slow, difficult pitch. She dismissed both Heath and Armitage in quick succession, and pulled the game back in Lancashire’s favour. Cross then defended nine runs in the last over. She struck with the very first ball to remove Armitage and seal the win.
Cross And Sophie Morris Restrict Durham’s Chase
Durham’s innings began steadily, with openers Mia Rogers and Emma Marlow putting on 34 runs without loss. Sophie Morris then struck three times to shift the momentum, and reduced Durham to 69 for 3 inside 17 overs. Rogers was bowled attempting a sweep for 18, Marlow miscued a shot to cover for 24, and Emily Windsor was stumped shortly after.
Armitage anchored the innings from there, and allowed Heath to play more freely for her 43. The pair used the pull shot and drives against both pace and spin to move Durham to 118 for 3 after 28 overs. They needed 52 more. Cross broke the stand with two wickets in successive deliveries, one caught at short fine leg and the other bowled through the gate, and left Durham at 140 for 5.
Fi Morris and Sophie Morris picked up further wickets as Durham slipped to 161 for 8. They needed nine off the last over. Cross’s opening delivery in that over accounted for Armitage, caught attempting a scoop, and the match tipped decisively towards Lancashire from that point.

Darcey Carter’s Fifty Sets Up Lancashire’s Total
Lancashire’s innings had its own share of struggle on a pitch offering turn and grip. Opener Darcey Carter top-scored with a patient 45 off 87 balls, though she managed only a single boundary through her innings. New-ball bowler Trudy Johnson picked up three wickets, including Eve Jones off the very first ball of the match after a rain-delayed start.
Australian all-rounder Eleanor Larosa and leg-spinner Katie Levick took two wickets apiece, and restricted Lancashire to just nine boundaries across the innings. Several batters, including Ellie Threlkeld with 21 and Fi Morris with 20, got starts without converting them into bigger scores. Lancashire eventually finished on 169 for 8 after Johnson removed Seren Smale and Grace Potts with consecutive deliveries in the final over.

Lancashire Keep Pressure On Warwickshire In Table
Cross’s bowling in the final two overs proved decisive, adding a fitting chapter to her last home appearance before retirement.
The result stretches Lancashire’s winning run to five matches in a row and gives them six wins from 14 games overall. They now sit close behind third-placed Warwickshire with two matches left to play. Durham, on the other hand, have been eliminated from the competition.
