Ajinkya Rahane has retired from all formats of cricket, leaving Kolkata Knight Riders without a captain heading into the 2027 IPL season. Rahane led the franchise through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Unless KKR bring in a leader through the auction or a trade, vice-captain Rinku Singh appears the most likely replacement.
Rinku Singh Leads the Race for Captaincy
KKR handed Rinku the vice-captaincy for the first time ahead of the 2026 season, a move the franchise described as part of his development as a leader.
Head coach Abhishek Nayar addressed the decision before the season began. He said Rinku has grown as both a cricketer and a leader over the years, and that while his performances have spoken for themselves, his presence off the field has earned the respect of teammates. Nayar added that the timing felt right for Rinku to take on more responsibility and eventually assume the captaincy from Rahane, particularly after his World Cup win.
Rinku’s record supports the case. He led Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title in 2024 and guided them to a runners-up finish in 2025, winning 13 of 18 matches across both seasons. He has also captained Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar ahead of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. His senior captaincy experience remains limited, but his results so far have been encouraging.
Narine and Powell Remain Alternative Options
Sunil Narine has never captained KKR, despite being with the franchise since 2012 and ranking as the highest wicket-taker among overseas bowlers in IPL history. At 38, he remains a central figure in the squad. He has also led sides across the wider Knight Riders network, including Trinbago Knight Riders, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Los Angeles Knight Riders, giving him leadership experience outside of KKR.

Rovman Powell offers another option. He has captained West Indies 37 times in T20Is between 2022 and 2024 and therefore has more senior leadership experience than either Rinku or Narine. His time with KKR has been minimal with two caps in 2025 and 11 in 2026, which could count against him if the franchise prioritises experience of the current squad.
Auction Timeline Adds Pressure to KKR’s Decision
KKR’s trade window remains open until a week before the auction, which is typically held in December, and reopens once the auction concludes. The BCCI has yet to confirm the retention deadline for teams, which usually falls in November.
With only one season remaining in the current three-year IPL cycle, running from 2025 to 2027, KKR face a choice. They can appoint a long-term captain now, or select a stop-gap option for 2027 and reassess their leadership plans before the next cycle begins. That decision will shape how the franchise approaches both the trade window and the auction in the months ahead.
