The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially appointed Litton Das as the new captain of the One Day International team on 29 July 2026. The 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter takes over the leadership role immediately to help the team prepare for the 2027 ICC Menβs Cricket World Cup.
This decision follows a disappointing 2-1 series loss against Zimbabwe earlier this month. Litton Das replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who led the side for just over a year. The BCB shared the news on social media, congratulating Litton Kumer Das on his new permanent role.
Why Bangladesh Chose Litton Das Now
The BCB wants to build a strong team for the next World Cup. Therefore, they decided to make a change at the top after the team lost in Zimbabwe. Litton Das is an experienced player who already knows how to lead. Specifically, he is already the captain of the Bangladesh T20 International (T20I) team. The board made the decision to hand him captaincy of both white-ball formats.
Litton has captained the ODI team before on a temporary basis. During those seven matches, he led the team to three victories. The BCB hopes this experience will help him as he takes the job permanently.

Replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz
Mehidy Hasan Miraz led the team to 10 wins and 9 losses. Miraz’s captaincy had some great moments for Bangladesh. They have recorded series wins against big teams like Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia and West Indies in home series.
But a recent defeat in Zimbabwe convinced the board they needed a new direction for the 2027 World Cup cycle. Miraz will now play his role as a key all-rounder for the team.

Preparing for the India Series in September
Litton Das’ first big test will be in a series against India in September 2026. This series is very important for Cricket and Politics both. There has been some friction between the two cricket boards of late.
The tension began when the Indian cricket board (BCCI) asked Mustafizur Rahman to quit the Indian Premier League (IPL) early. And that was the reason why Bangladesh decided not to feature in the T20 World Cup, citing safety reasons. It also forced a previous tour to be delayed from August 2025 until next September.

What’s Next For Bangladesh?
The BCB has given Litton Das a year to build his squad for the 2027 World Cup. The board wants him to find the right mix of young talent and experienced players.
Additionally, having the same captain for the two short forms of the game helps in planning. Players will know exactly what the captain expects from them in both T20s and ODIs. Litton has shown that he can perform under pressure, and the fans hope he can repeat his exceptional feat while leading his side.
