Max Holden struck a rapid half-century to push Middlesex firmly ahead of Lancashire on the second day of their County Championship Division Two match at Merchant Taylors’ School in Northwood. The hosts closed the day at 116 for 2 in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 212 runs with eight wickets still in hand.
Holden, who had endured a rough outing in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 50 off just 45 balls, hitting nine boundaries along the way. He found support from Ben Geddes, who stayed not out on 24. Together the pair steadied Middlesex’s second innings after both openers fell early, and their aggressive stand at more than a run a ball left Lancashire chasing the game going into day three.
James Anderson Leads Lancashire Fightback With the Ball
Earlier in the day, James Anderson turned in a disciplined spell of seam bowling despite ongoing fitness concerns over a calf problem that nearly kept him out of the match altogether. He picked up 3 for 40, bowling long spells from the Benham End and repeatedly beating the bat. His reward eventually came through a delivery that kept low and slipped under Luke Hollman’s defence, removing the batter for 54.
Ben Walkden and George Balderson backed Anderson well, each taking three wickets as Middlesex were bowled out for 247 shortly before lunch. Ryan Higgins top-scored for the innings with 44, adding useful runs down the order after the top order had wobbled.
Middlesex Seamers Restrict Lancashire to 151
Middlesex responded strongly with the ball once their turn came to bowl. Tom Helm led the attack with 4 for 40, while Higgins claimed 3 for 39 and young seamer Naavya Sharma, already capped at England Lions level, picked up 3 for 39 of his own. Lancashire never recovered from an early collapse and were bowled out for 151, handing Middlesex a first-innings lead of 96 runs.
Matty Hurst was the one batter who held firm for Lancashire, scoring 46 at the top of the order despite surviving a dropped catch and a blow to the helmet from a short ball. Arav Shetty offered brief resistance with 22 before Sharma removed both him and Hurst, while Helm and Higgins cleaned up the tail to end the innings.

Middlesex Openers Fall Before Holden Takes Charge

Middlesex began their second innings needing quick runs to press home their advantage, but lost both openers cheaply. Tom Bailey removed Sam Robson, while Balderson dismissed Hollman for 22. Holden then took over, playing several attacking shots to reach his fifty in the final over of the day and put his side in a commanding position heading into day three.
With Middlesex leading by 212 runs and still holding eight wickets, Lancashire face a difficult task to stay in contention for the match. Leus du Plooy, the Middlesex captain, along with Higgins, Harry Duke, Zafar Gohar, Toby Roland-Jones, Helm and Sharma are still to bat, giving the hosts scope to extend their advantage further before any declaration is considered.
