Brendon McCullum: ‘Commitment to England Has Never Wavered’ Despite Seven Defeats in Nine Tests

McCullum: Commitment to England Has Never Wavered

Brendon McCullum has rejected suggestions that his position as England’s Test coach is under threat, saying his commitment to English cricket “has never wavered” despite a difficult run of results. The comments come after England lost the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, going down 2-1 in the series, their first home series defeat in a three-match format since 2012.

McCullum holds an ECB contract running until the end of the 2027 Ashes, secured through a contract extension in September 2024 that covers both red-ball and white-ball cricket. Rather than dwelling on the series defeat, his attention has already turned to the five-match T20I series against India, which starts in Durham on Wednesday.

McCullum Defends Record Despite Run of Defeats

Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum acknowledged the pressure following seven losses in nine Tests, a run stretching back to the Oval Test against India in August last year. He said balance was required during periods of difficulty, adding that he remains motivated in the role.

“My enthusiasm for English cricket and my commitment to English cricket has never wavered,” McCullum said. “I’ve got a firm belief in the direction that this team can go. We still have an identity about us, but we want to continue to furnish and harness that, to get us in a direction that we are the team that we want to be, and that we want to represent for the people of this country.”

He pointed to England’s 115-run win in the first Test at Lord’s as proof the team could develop into “a more rounded cricket team” rather than relying solely on talent. McCullum was less critical of the two losses that followed. The Oval defeat, he said, was complicated by the suspension of Stokes and Gus Atkinson over an alleged breach of team protocol, while the Trent Bridge loss came against a strong New Zealand side that outplayed England in a tough contest.

“The talent that sits within this country is immense,” McCullum said. “We just need to make sure we continue to give that opportunity, but still get results along the way.”

Focus Shifts to T20I Series Against India

England now face a quick turnaround, with only 48 hours between the end of the Test series and the start of the one-day matches. Harry Brook, who has Stokes’ full backing to take over as Test captain, will lead the T20I side against India starting Wednesday in Durham. Brook was seen training with a white ball on the final morning of the Trent Bridge Test, alongside fellow multi-format player Jacob Bethell.

McCullum said the scheduling presented challenges but insisted the squad had enough depth to manage it. “You can’t do anything about the scheduling, it is what it is,” he said. “You’ve just got to operate around it, and the good thing is we’ve got some good strong options within our squad.”

Workload Management Key Ahead of India Series

He added that workload management would be central to selection decisions heading into Durham. “We look to Durham in two days’ time, and we look at the workloads that some of our boys have had in this Test, and you work out what’s the right balance, and how do you manufacture it? When we get up to Durham, we’ll make our plan, and we’ll look forward to the Indian series getting underway,” McCullum said.

The T20I series against India begins Wednesday in Durham, marking the first assignment of England’s compressed multi-format schedule this summer.
