Mumbai Indians secured a victory against Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets on May 4. The home team chased a massive target of 229 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. They reached the target with eight balls to spare and lost only 4 wickets.
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton set a record for the highest opening partnership of 143 runs during this match 47 of the IPL 2026. MI are still fighting for the playoffs while LSG remain at the bottom of the points table after their sixth consecutive defeat of the season.
Mumbai Indians Secure Record-Breaking Run Chase at Wankhede
Mumbai Indians completed the highest successful run chase ever recorded at the Wankhede Stadium during this match. The team finished on 229/4 after 18.4 overs, overtaking Lucknow’s total of 228/5. This win is the third victory for the five-time champions in ten matches this season.
Consequently, the team now has six points and moves to the ninth spot in the IPL standings. Suryakumar Yadav led the Mumbai Indians as the stand-in captain because Hardik Pandya missed the match due to back spasms injury.
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton Record Breaking Partnership
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton made 143 runs opening partnership in just 65 balls. This partnership established a new record for the most century stands in the history of the MI franchise. The duo has now recorded three partnerships of over 100 runs together.
Rohit Sharma made a grand return after missing five matches with a hamstring injury. He scored 84 runs from 44 balls. His innings included six boundaries and seven sixes. Rohit reached his half-century in just 27 balls.
Ryan Rickelton scored 83 runs off only 32 balls. Rickelton hit six fours and eight sixes. He reached his own half-century in 22 deliveries. He particularly targeted the LSG pace bowlers, including Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan.
In a post-match interview, Rickelton explained that the pace and bounce of the Wankhede pitch suited his style of play. He also mentioned that he enjoys batting with one of India’s greatest, Rohti Sharma.

Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh Explosive Start
In their first innings, LSG set a massive total of 228/5. Nicholas Pooran made 63 runs from just 21 balls. Pooran hit eight sixes and one four, reaching his half-century in only 16 balls. This was his first fifty of the 2026 season.
Mitchell Marsh made 44 runs from 25 balls. Marsh and Pooran shared a rapid second-wicket partnership of 94 runs. They made 90/1 within the first six overs of the game. However, Corbin Bosch bowled out both batters in the ninth over for the Indians.
After a crashing middle-over, Himmat Singh remained unbeaten on 40 runs from 31 balls. Meanwhile, Aiden Markram finished on 31 not out from 25 deliveries. Together, they added 68 runs for the sixth wicket to push the total past 220.
Mumbai Indians Overcome Middle-Order Hurdles
Mumbai Indians lost a few quick wickets after the 143-run stand. Mohsin Khan bowled out Ryan Rickelton in the 11th over to break the opening partnership. Likewise, Manimaran Siddharth dismissed Rohit Sharma in the 14th over.
Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav also lost their wickets early without making an impact. Siddharth bowled out Tilak Varma for 11 runs. Suryakumar Yadav scored 12 runs before Mohammed Shami caught him near the boundary.
Naman Dhir scored 23 runs from 12 balls to finish the game. He hit boundaries against Prince Yadav and a six off Shami to bring the target closer. Will Jacks hit the winning runs and finished on 10 not out. Mumbai Indians chased down the target with eight balls to spare.
What’s Next
LSG faced their sixth consecutive loss of this season. They stand at the bottom of the points table with only two wins from nine games. Captain Rishabh Pant expressed disappointment after losing the game. He stated that the team was short of 10 to 15 runs of a winning total.
Statistically, LSG have no chance for qualification. However, they are not mathematically eliminated yet. The team will need to win all their remaining matches and rely on other results to have any hope of advancing.
On the other hand, MI currently sit in ninth place but are only a few points behind the mid-table teams. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the bowlers for pulling the game back in the middle overs. Despite conceding 90 runs in the first six overs, the MI bowlers only gave 138 runs in the final 14 overs.
MI will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10. Likewise, LSG will also face RCB on May 7 in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
