New Zealand pacer Nathan Smith has won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June 2026. The recognition comes after his standout bowling performances during New Zealand’s Test series win in England, part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Smith led New Zealand’s bowling attack through a 2-1 series victory over England. He beat out Bangladesh all-rounder Mossadek Hossain and India captain Shubman Gill to claim the monthly honour.
“This is really special. It was a great tour of England for the boys, and this is pretty cool,” Smith said after the award announcement. “I don’t usually play for individual awards, but it’s nice to receive this recognition and, more importantly, to have contributed to a series win.”
Smith Finishes as Leading Wicket-Taker in England Series
The 28-year-old ended the series as the top wicket-taker with 16 dismissals. He was named Player of the Series, a notable achievement given New Zealand lost the opening Test at Lord’s before turning the series around.
Smith’s best performance arrived in that opening match. He took three wickets in the first innings, then followed with a career-best 6/70 in the second innings. The figures marked his best-ever match haul, even though New Zealand lost the Test.
Speaking on his approach to the game, Smith said individual accolades are not his priority. “That’s all I want to do for New Zealand – try as hard as I can and contribute in whatever way I can,” he said.

New Zealand Complete Series Comeback
New Zealand responded to the Lord’s defeat by winning the next two Tests to seal the series 2-1. Smith remained central to that turnaround.
In the second Test, he picked up one wicket but contributed a valuable 38 runs with the bat, helping New Zealand build a stronger position in the second innings.
The series decider saw Smith produce his most influential bowling display of the tour. His 4/91 in the first innings gave New Zealand a crucial 82-run lead. He then added two more wickets in the second innings, sealing the series win for the visitors.

Smith Leads Depleted New Zealand Attack

New Zealand went into the series without several of their frontline pace bowlers due to injury. With the attack shorthanded, Smith took on a leadership role among the bowlers and was consistent throughout all three Tests.
His 16 wickets in the series and contributions with the bat in the lower order saw him named as the player of the tour, winning the Player of the Series award and ICC Player of the Month for June 2026.
Smith’s win adds to New Zealand’s recent form in Test cricket, with the series victory in England marking a significant result for the team. The ICC award recognises his individual contribution across a month that included one of his career-best bowling performances.
