Jack Nelson and Zafar Gohar led Middlesex to a 35-run win over Yorkshire at Lord’s on Sunday. Nelson’s 76 and Gohar’s four-wicket haul pushed Middlesex back to the top of the Group B table in the One-Day Cup.
Nelson’s Fifty Anchors Middlesex Innings
Middlesex chose to bat first after winning the toss. Josh De Caires gave them a fast start, hitting 42 off 34 balls with nine boundaries. He targeted Jack White early, picking up four fours in one over, including a free hit. Nathan Fernandes joined the charge and pulled George Hill into the Mound Stand off a no-ball. The powerplay brought 70 runs.
Ben Cliff then changed the course of the innings. He bowled De Caires through the gate, had Fernandes caught at backward point, and knocked over Aaryan Sawant three balls later. Three wickets fell in the space of seven balls, and Middlesex slipped to 77 for 3.
Nelson walked in and steadied things. Playing only his second List A match, he found the extra-cover and mid-off region with ease, striking seven fours on his way to fifty. He then slog-swept White into the Tavern Stand to accelerate the innings.
Nelson added 94 runs with Gohar for the seventh wicket before falling for 76 attempting a reverse-ramp. He had earlier scored 128 for England Under-19s against South Africa and once represented Harrow School at the same ground. Middlesex were bowled out for 246 in 48 overs, with Hill and Cliff sharing seven wickets between them.
Zafar Gohar’s Spell Turns the Match
Yorkshire lost Adam Lyth early, caught behind off Naavya Sharma, before William Luxton had his stumps rearranged by Toby Roland-Jones. James Wharton and Will Bennison then rebuilt the innings through the middle overs, driving freely and cutting anything short. The pair took Yorkshire past 100 and looked set to control the chase.
Gohar broke the stand, turning one past Wharton, who was stumped by Joe Cracknell. Sam Whiteman fell to the very next delivery, bowled. Noah Cornwell trapped Hill in front soon after, and Gohar struck again to remove Finlay Bean caught behind. Yorkshire slid to 106 for 6, and the match swung firmly toward Middlesex.
Bennison tried to rebuild once more, pulling Cornwell for six to reach fifty. Skipper Dom Bess survived a dropped catch at cover on 16 and kept fighting alongside him. Gohar returned to bowl Bennison and finished with figures of 4 for 24 from his ten overs, the pick of the Middlesex bowlers.
Yorkshire Fall Short Despite Bess Resistance
Bess reached his own half-century, scoring 59 off 75 balls, but wickets kept falling at the other end. Cornwell picked up Kuldeep Yadav and Cliff in quick succession, finishing with 3 for 35. Bess was the last man out, caught off Tom Helm, and Yorkshire were bowled out for 211 in 47.3 overs.
Middlesex claimed the 35-run win and moved back to the top of Group B. The result gave them four points, while Yorkshire remained without a win in the fixture. Nelson’s innings and Gohar’s bowling spell stood out as the difference between the two sides at Lord’s.
