The Netherlands defeated Nepal by six wickets in Utrecht on Thursday, strengthening their position in the race for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Pacer Alex Roy and spinner Roelof van der Merwe each claimed three wickets to restrict Nepal to 157, and captain Scott Edwards finished unbeaten on 61 as the Dutch side chased down the target with more than five overs to spare.
The result keeps the Netherlands firmly placed in third position on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 standings, with the top four teams set to qualify directly for next year’s Qualifier event.
Bowlers Set the Platform Early
Roy and Klein struck with the new ball to remove Nepal’s top order inside the opening overs, putting the innings under pressure from the start. Van der Merwe then worked through the middle overs alongside Logan van Beek and Bas de Leede, and the combined effort limited Nepal to a below-par total on a surface that offered turn as the match progressed.
Middle-order batter Noah Croes credited the bowling unit for setting the tone, saying the early wickets from Roy and Klein created the pressure that carried through the rest of the innings. He added that the spin pairing held the game together in the middle overs, allowing the Dutch side to defend a manageable total with room to work.
Edwards Anchors the Chase
Chasing 158 for victory, the Netherlands lost early wickets but recovered through a composed innings from Edwards, who batted through periods of difficulty to guide his side home. Croes supported him with an unbeaten 34, and the pair steadied the innings after a mid-order wobble.

Croes described the chase as a grind rather than a smooth pursuit, noting that Edwards batted with control throughout and that their partnership settled into a rhythm as both batters found scoring areas in similar zones of the ground.
The Netherlands eventually reached the target with more than five overs unused, sealing a six-wicket win and their second consecutive positive result in the League 2 campaign.

Netherlands Turn Attention to Namibia
With the win over Nepal now behind them, the Netherlands will face Namibia in Utrecht on Saturday, followed by further League 2 fixtures against Nepal and Namibia later in the week. The team will then close out the year with a tri-series involving the UAE and Oman.
Croes said the squad was not looking too far ahead and would use the rest day to recover before the Namibia match. He pointed out that Namibia possesses a well-rounded attack that will pose different challenges compared to Nepal, and said the team planned to prepare accordingly.
The Netherlands currently sit in a strong position to secure direct qualification, and consistent results over the coming weeks will determine whether they can maintain their place inside the top four before the League 2 standings are finalized.
