Matheesha Pathirana Injured Ahead of Super 8s, Sri Lanka Names Dilshan Madushanka Replacement

Matheesha Pathirana Injured Ahead of Super 8s, Sri Lanka Name Dilshan Madushanka Replacement

Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup 2026 after scans confirmed a calf strain that is expected to take several weeks to heal. The injury was sustained during the island nation’s group stage match against Australia in Pallekele, where the right-arm quick bowler went down clutching his left leg after bowling his fourth delivery and was helped off the field. He did not return to bowl in that innings.

Vikram Rathour, Sri Lanka’s batting consultant, confirmed the severity of the setback on Wednesday ahead of the team’s final group match against Zimbabwe.

“I think he’s been declared unfit for the rest of the tournament. I think that news will be coming out, if it’s ruling him out,” the batting consultant said. The pacer’s IPL availability is understood to be unaffected at this stage.

The right-arm quick’s absence is a significant blow for the Lions. The death bowling specialist is widely regarded as Sri Lanka’s most dangerous bowler in the final overs and the fastest in their pace attack. His ability to deliver yorkers and short-pitched deliveries at the back end of innings has made him a key weapon in the shortest format, and replacing that skillset at short notice presents a genuine challenge for the management.

Madushanka Named as Replacement

Dilshan Madushanka, 25, was named as the injured pacer’s replacement on Wednesday, the eve of Sri Lanka’s final group game against Zimbabwe. Both sides had already secured their places in the Super Eight stage of the tournament by the time the announcement was made.

The left-arm pacer has taken 15 wickets across his 15 T20 internationals at an average of 31.86, with an economy rate of 9.75. His most recent T20I appearance came in July 2024 against India in Pallekele, a difficult outing in which the left-armer conceded 45 runs from three overs.

Despite the modest recent returns, his record at major tournaments offers reason for confidence. At the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, the left-arm quick was among the leading wicket-takers in the competition, finishing with 21 scalps β€” a performance that established him as a genuine threat with the ball when fit and firing.

An Injury-Plagued Road Back to the Squad

The 25-year-old’s path back into the Sri Lanka setup has been far from smooth. The 2024 campaign proved particularly difficult β€” the cricketer missed the start of the IPL that year due to injury and struggled for form as he was gradually reintroduced to ODI cricket toward the end of the season. A further leg injury in early 2025 kept the pacer sidelined for the better part of a year.

He was recalled for a home series against Bangladesh but did not feature in any of the matches. The left-arm quick eventually returned to action during Sri Lanka’s tour of Zimbabwe, picking up five wickets across two ODIs before suffering another setback, this time to his knee.

Recurring fitness issues meant he was absent from the Lions’ final set of tours ahead of this T20 World Cup, but Pathirana’s enforced exit has handed Dilshan another opportunity at the highest level.

What Next for Sri Lanka in the Super Eights

With the group stage now concluded, Sri Lanka turns their attention to the Super Eight stage, where the returning pacer will look to make an immediate impact. The management will be monitoring his fitness and form closely, with the left-arm quick expected to be handed an extended run in the XI in the absence of Pathirana.

The Lions’ Super Eight fixtures are as demanding as they come β€” England in Pallekele, New Zealand at Khettarama, and Pakistan in Pallekele again. All three opponents possess destructive batting line-ups capable of exposing any weakness in the death bowling.

If Dilshan can rediscover the form that made him one of the 2023 ODI World Cup’s standout performers, Sri Lanka’s pace attack remains competitive despite the setback. If not, the pressure on the rest of the bowling unit will grow considerably as the stakes rise in the rounds ahead.
