PSL 2026: Gladiators Crush Kingsmen by 40 Runs

PSL 2026: Gladiators Beat Kingsmen by 40 Runs

Quetta Gladiators finally got their PSL 2026 campaign off the ground, beating Hyderabad Kingsmen by 40 runs in the 5th match at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on 29 March 2026.

The win was never really in doubt once the Gladiators got going. Defending 175 on a pitch that had given up 215 and 172 the day before was always going to be a tough ask, but the Gladiators made it look a lot easier than it should have been.

Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz Rescue Gladiators After Early Collapse

Gladiators chose to bat, but it did not start well at all. Saud Shakeel was back in the hut off the fourth ball of the match for just 4, and Rilee Rossouw came and went for a duck off 5 balls. Two wickets down for 25 inside four overs, not exactly the start the captain would have wanted.

Then Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz walked in and completely changed the game. These are two young batters still early in their careers, yet they batted like they had been doing this for years. They put on 89 together off 64 balls, and the beauty of it was how simple they kept it, running hard between the wickets, not throwing their wickets away, and waiting for the bad ball to put away.

Both of them reached fifty off exactly 36 balls each. Shamyl made 54 off 41 with 3 fours and 3 sixes. Nawaz was right there with him, 53 off 40, with 2 fours and 3 sixes. For Shamyl, it was his second PSL match ever, and his second fifty, something no Pakistan batter had ever done before in the PSL.

When both fell, the innings wobbled badly. Four wickets went down in just 14 balls. Maheesh Theekshana, playing his first-ever PSL game, made an immediate impact, knocking over Khawaja Nafay and Ben McDermott off consecutive deliveries to leave Gladiators in a bit of a mess. Tom Curran had other ideas, though. He came in late and absolutely went after it, 31 off 18 balls, hitting 3 sixes and a four, and pushed Gladiators past 170 when it looked like they might fall short of it.

Riley Meredith Leads Kingsmen Bowling, but Not Enough

Among the Kingsmen bowlers, Riley Meredith was the one who caused the most damage, 3 wickets for 38 in his 4 overs, and all three of those wickets were big ones. Theekshana, as mentioned, was outstanding on debut. Four overs, 24 runs, 2 wickets on a ground and in a tournament he had never played in before, he looked completely at home.

Akif Javed chipped in with 2 wickets in just 2 overs late in the innings, but by then, Curran had already done his damage.

Kingsmen Crumble in the Chase: Three Wickets Down in the Powerplay

The chase never really got going. Alzarri Joseph’s very first over set the tone. Saim Ayub, one of Kingsmen’s most dangerous batters, was caught behind for 8 off just 4 balls. That over cost 17 runs, but the early wicket mattered more than the runs. Then Abrar Ahmed came on and quietly dismantled the middle order: Maaz Sadaqat gone in the second over, Usman Khan gone in the sixth. Kingsmen were 37 for 3 at the end of the power play, and the chase was effectively over right there.

Hassan Khan tried to spark something. His 31 off 19 balls, three fours and a six, gave the Kingsmen dressing room a brief moment of hope, but he fell in the 15th over and took that hope with him. Irfan Khan was the only other batter who showed any real fight, making 33 off 25 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes, but Abrar had the last word, McDermott whipped off the bails, and Irfan was stumped in the 18th over. After that, it was just a matter of time. Kingsmen finished on 134/8, 40 runs short, and never truly close.

Abrar Ahmed and Ahmed Daniyal Were the Difference With the Ball

Abrar Ahmed was the man with the ball. Three wickets for 23 in 4 overs: clean, controlled, and clinical. But if anything, Ahmed Daniyal was even better. Two wickets for just 13 runs in 4 overs. That is an extraordinary return in T20 cricket, and what stood out was not just the wickets but how he bowled in between them, hitting his lengths consistently, giving the batters absolutely nothing to free their arms on.

Saud Shakeel himself called it out after the game, saying that kind of discipline is rare to see. Usman Tariq quietly did his job too, 1 wicket for 26 in 4 overs, nothing flashy but always steady. Joseph leaked runs, 39 off his 4 overs, but that first-over wicket of Ayub was worth more than the runs it cost.

Kingsmen’s Fielding Errors Continue to Hurt Them

PSL 2026: Gladiators Crush Kingsmen by 40 Runs 3

The bigger worry for Kingsmen is not the batting or the bowling; it is the basics. Five no-balls in a single match, three of them from spinners, which is almost unheard of. Add that to the four catches they dropped in their previous game against Lahore Qalandars, and a pattern is forming that has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with focus.

Labuschagne did not hide from it after the game; he admitted he personally grassed a sitter himself. That kind of honesty is good, but at some point, the admissions need to turn into action. He was also their top scorer with 23 off 21 balls, which tells its own story about how the rest of the batting held up. Two games, two losses. The talent is there in this Kingsmen side, but right now, they are beating themselves before the opposition even gets a chance to.

What’s Next

Both sides move on quickly, that is T20 cricket. Kingsmen have no time to feel sorry for themselves. They are back on April 1 against Multan Sultans in the 8th match of the tournament, and at this point, it is a game they simply cannot afford to lose. Three defeats from three would put their season in serious danger before it has barely started.

Gladiators, meanwhile, face Islamabad United next in the 9th match, a proper test of whether this win was a statement or just a good day. Both games are in Lahore, with no crowds in the stands, as PSL 2026 continues to be played entirely across Lahore and Karachi; the situation is being forced by the fuel crisis gripping the country in the wake of the ongoing Middle East conflict. The cricket goes on, but the backdrop is anything but normal.
