Surrey beat Kent by 95 runs at the Kia Oval on Wednesday, riding on Ryan Patel’s attacking half-century to post a commanding total before bowling out their opponents in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
The result lifts Surrey to four wins from six Group A matches and pushes them into contention alongside the group’s leading sides, while Kent’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage have taken a heavy blow after their third defeat of the campaign.
Patel and Sibley Set the Platform
Put in to bat first, Surrey built their innings around a strong opening partnership. Patel struck 73 off 70 balls, hitting a six and 13 fours along the way, while Dom Sibley supported him with a composed 53.
The pair added 116 runs for the first wicket inside 20 overs and gave Surrey the platform they needed. Rory Burns then played a quickfire cameo, scoring 33 from just 18 deliveries to keep the scoring rate high through the middle overs.
Surrey looked set for a total well past 300 when they reached 191 for 2 in the 34th over, but Kent’s bowlers pulled things back. Matt Milnes led the fightback, finishing with figures of 3 for 32 from his ten overs and removing Tom Lawes, Ralphie Albert and Josh Blake in the closing stages.
Ollie Sykes struck two sixes off Matt Parkinson before falling to Ekansh Singh, who also picked up two wickets. The last eight Surrey wickets managed only 93 more runs, and the innings ended on 286 in 48.3 overs, with Josh Blake’s 32 off 27 balls the only notable contribution from the lower order.

Lawes and Ealham Break Through Kent’s Batting
Chasing 287, Kent never got close. Dan Worrall opened the bowling with a tight six-over spell, including three maidens, and conceded just 10 runs to set the tone. Tom Lawes struck early, having Ben Dawkins caught behind for 9 off his fifth delivery, with Rory Burns diving to his right to complete the catch. Tommy Ealham and Adam Thomas then combined to reduce Kent from a relatively steady 80 for 2 to 88 for 5 inside 24 overs.
Sam Northeast fell for 24, stumped off Ealham as he attempted a flick to midwicket, while Thomas struck twice in consecutive overs, removing Chris Benjamin at square cover and Harry Finch at point.
Only a sixth-wicket stand of 86 between Jaydn Denly, who made 51, and Ekansh Singh, who scored 38, offered any resistance. Lawes returned to finish with 4 for 40, and Ealham added 3 for 37 as Kent were bowled out for 191 in 41.5 overs.

Result Boosts Surrey’s Knockout Push
The 95-run win marks Surrey’s fourth victory in six Group A games and strengthens their position near the top of the table as the competition heads toward its business end.
For Kent, the defeat leaves them with three losses from six matches, a record that makes qualification for the quarter-finals extremely difficult.
Surrey will look to carry the same momentum in their remaining fixtures, while Kent face a tough challenge to keep their campaign alive.
