Sanju Samson broke MS Dhoni’s record for most runs scored by a CSK wicketkeeper in a single IPL season during Monday’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk on May 18, 2026. Dhoni had scored 461 runs across 16 innings in the 2013 season.
He now has 477 runs this season from 13 innings at an average of 47.70, with two hundreds and a fifty. Only Dhoni in 2013 and Parthiv Patel in 2008 have previously crossed 100 runs for CSK as a wicketkeeper in a single season.
MS Dhoni did not play. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed at the toss that Dhoni was unavailable due to fitness issues.
CSK Post 180 But SRH Chase It Down Comfortably
Samson needed 12 runs to pass it when he came out to bat and got there in six balls, scoring 15 off Nitish Kumar Reddy’s opening over.
He kept going. Three consecutive boundaries off Praful Hinge in the second over took him to 27 off 11 balls before Pat Cummins came on. A yorker first, then one outside off stump β Samson went for the drive, edged it, and was caught behind for 27. Short innings, but the record was already done.
Chennai batted first and finished at 180/7. Dewald Brevis made 44 off 27 balls, and Kartik Sharma added 32, but no one could push the innings beyond that range. Cummins took 3/28 from four overs and was the most difficult bowler to score off on a surface that was not easy to bat on. Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain each took two wickets between them.
SRH chased 181 in 19 overs, losing five wickets. Ishan Kishan made 70 off 47 balls and was named Player of the Match. Heinrich Klaasen hit 47 off 26 before being stumped off Noor Ahmad. Abhishek Sharma made 26 at the top before Akeal Hosein had him caught. The win gave SRH two points and moved them further up the table. CSK remain sixth.

Samson’s place in this season

Samson came to CSK after years at Rajasthan Royals and has been one of the more consistent batters in the tournament this season. Two centuries and five fifties across 13 innings at nearly 48 per innings puts him in a different bracket from most others in the competition.Β
