India’s T20I setup is heading for a major change. Shreyas Iyer is set to be named the new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, as selectors shift focus toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that same year. The official squad announcement is expected on Saturday for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland and England.
Suryakumar, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in March, is not just losing the captaincy; he is likely to be dropped from the squad entirely.
Why Suryakumar Yadav Is Losing the Captaincy
Suryakumar Yadav’s form has been the central concern. At 35, his numbers in 2026 have raised serious questions. During the T20 World Cup, he scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72 โ a modest return by his own standards. His IPL 2026 campaign was worse. He managed just 270 runs in 13 innings, averaging 20.76 with a strike rate of 147.54.
Yadav is known for his aggressive, match-winning approach, but these numbers have fallen well below expectations. The selectors appear to have decided that a rebuild makes more sense than continuity, with younger and in-form players now taking priority.
This follows a pattern the Indian selectors set last year. In 2025, Rohit Sharma captained India to the Champions Trophy title in March but was replaced as ODI captain before the next series in Australia in October. Rohit remained in the squad, but the captaincy moved on. Suryakumar may not even retain his place.
Shreyas Iyer’s Case for the T20I Leadership
Shreyas Iyer, 31, brings a strong captaincy record to the role. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024. He led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in 2020 and 2025, respectively. As evidenced by his results across franchises, he is a consistent leader in pressure.

A component of the decision was based on his batting prowess. He scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and added 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026.
These are not just good numbers; they show he belongs at this level right now. The only gap in his T20I record is time. Shreyas has not played a T20I since December 2023. Squad combination issues kept him out, with Suryakumar and Tilak Varma holding middle-order spots. He was added as an injury cover during the home series against New Zealand in January 2026, but did not play.
Now, the path is clear for him to return, and lead.

Sooryavanshi Set for Historic First India Call-Up
The bigger talking point around the squad may well be 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is set to become the youngest player named in an India men’s squad since Sachin Tendulkar in the late 1980s. His IPL 2026 season made the selection impossible to ignore.
Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30, numbers that belong to a different conversation altogether. Before the T20I tour, he will feature for India A in a tri-series in Sri Lanka, involving Afghanistan, from June 9 to 21.
India’s tour begins with two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28, followed by five T20Is in England between July 1 and 11. A new chapter in Indian T20 cricket is about to begin.
