South Africa’s women’s cricket team moved to a commanding 2-0 series lead after beating India by eight wickets in the second T20I at Durban on Sunday.
Chloe Tryon and Tumi Sekhukhune each claimed three wickets to restrict India to 147, and then Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus made the chase look straightforward, reaching 148 for 2 in just 17.1 overs.
Openers Put the Chase to Bed Early
South Africa needed a solid start, and Wolvaardt and Luus delivered one of the most dominant powerplay performances of the series so far. The pair put on 106 runs in 73 deliveries for the first wicket, with boundaries flowing consistently from both ends.
Luus struck a six off Shreyanka Patil, while Wolvaardt drove and placed the ball into gaps with the precision that has defined her batting at the top of the order. South Africa raced to 66 for 0 at the end of the powerplay, effectively neutralising India’s bowling attack before the fielding restrictions were even lifted.
Wolvaardt brought up her fifty off 30 balls, reaching the milestone with a six and a four off Shree Charani in the same over. It was her 15th half-century in T20 internationals and perhaps one of her more authoritative ones.
The partnership crossed 100 before India made their first breakthrough, with Wolvaardt caught at long-on attempting to loft Shreyanka. Luus followed soon after, stumped attempting a sweep, but her 41-ball fifty had already done the damage. Tazmin Britts and Annerie Dercksen wrapped up the remaining runs without trouble.
India Collapse After Promising Start
Earlier in the day, India’s innings followed a familiar pattern of a promising start undone by a middle-order collapse. Shafali Verma was the standout batter, hitting boundaries at will and bringing up her fifty off just 31 balls in her 100th T20I appearance, a milestone made more impressive by the fact that she is only 22.
Smriti Mandhana contributed 12 before Tryon removed her in the power play, and debutant Anushka Sharma showed composure at the crease, rotating strike effectively and adding 53 runs alongside Shafali for the third wicket.
That partnership gave India a platform, but South Africa’s bowlers systematically tightened their grip through the middle overs. Tryon dismissed Jemimah Rodrigues to complete a double strike inside the power play, and Nonkululeko Mlaba applied further pressure through the middle phase.
The key moment came in the 14th over when Shafali was caught by Nadine de Klerk, and Tryon returned to dismiss Anushka in the same passage of play. India were suddenly 109 for 4 after being 99 for 2 two overs earlier.
From that point, the innings fell apart quickly. Harmanpreet Kaur was run out at a critical stage, while Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh both fell cheaply attempting to force the pace. Arundhati Reddy and Shree Charani added some late runs, but they could not arrest the slide. India lost their last eight wickets for only 48 runs, finishing on 147. Tryon ended with 3 for 22 and Sekhukhune with 3 for 31 in what was a controlled, disciplined bowling effort from the hosts.
South Africa now lead the five-match T20I series 2-0, with the third game coming up later this week. India will need to find answers quickly, particularly in the middle order, if they are to get back into the contest.
